Abrupt no air through vents/hvac selection?

Post by alexandermf »

Soo randomly today I was leaving work and started my car up. Heard a weird 3-5 time clunk behind the hvac unit and then it stopped. Immediately after I had no air coming through my vents when I put selector on vent or bilev. Only vents it comes out is by feet or defrost by windshield and defrost on door trim. It's never done this before and blower motor is still going and I'm still getting heat. Just selector and air problem. Now whenever my car is on this weird noise is going on behind the hvac.

Now I'm wondering if my hvac unit just pooped out and I need to replace the unit with another or if some weird vent plastic tunnel behind it fell or got moved somehow which would be weird. Here is a video I shot of the sound. It's like my hvac is at a dubstep concert. I'm gonna post it in a minute but figured id post to see if anyone knows of this issue.

It could be the selector motor tripping up. Before you tear the top of the dash up, go in underneath the steering wheel. Remove the main panel beneath the wheel and if you look toward the center of the dash you'll see the selector motor that is connected to a system of tracks which select the different air vents. See if your "house" tones are coming from that motor for starters.

Also, it may be something with the HVAC control unit too. This thread has pics on what I had to do with the solder joints to fix my problem.

Mine acted out intermittently too, but all was fixed after I resoldered the joints on the board. It's not really circuits per se. Just a board with indicators and switches.

Don't replace it with another unit. This module is prone to age and stress fatigue cracking. Chances are good you'll get another in same conditions. Just remelt every solder joint. It doesn't take that long.
