Rebuild/tune-up

So I'm thinking of rebuilding and/or basic tuning-up my engine and tranny. Where should I do this? At the local dealership, or on my own? And for the transmission, how much would that cost if I needed to replace parts on it?

A dealership or shop will charge quite a bit. On your own would be cheapest if you have some knowledge.
You can probably find cheap used transmissions on the common subaru forums.

Where are you located and what level of knowledge do you have regarding engine, and most importantly do you have a place and time to do the work?
Would this be for a turbo or non-turbo engine?

In New Mexico, With a normal knowledge of the engine. It's a N/A 2.2 and I do have a place to work, but it's my DD.

If it's your daily driver and you need the car to get around, my suggestion would be to try and pick up a used non-turbo EJ22 and rebuild it. If you have a spare car to drive then you could pull your engine and do the work, but you never know what you're going to find until you dig into the engine and whether just the standard stuff needs to be done or if you for some reason need a new crank or camshaft.
I guess I'll ask the question, have you done a compression and/or leakdown test on the engine? If not, I'd probably suggest doing that before you dig in and decide to rebuild the engine when it's not necessary. If everything comes back good with the compression and leak down numbers, I would not suggest rebuilding the motor, but just do the normal maintenance stuff like seals, timing belt, etc.
How many miles are on the engine?

No I have not. I'll see into how much that would cost.
And it's the original engine, so around 241,000 miles.

I'm the 3rd owner, so I don't know what has and hasn't been done. I change the oil ever 3-5k and I know the timing belt and water pump are new. And I clean the injectors ever 10k or so with a bottle of injector cleaner, and I try and keep the engine bay clean. I also cleaned the intake at the butterfly valve. And spark plugs and wires are brand new.

Ok, yeah the motor has a decent amount of miles on it, but I think doing a compression and leak down test wouldn't hurt. A compression test is pretty simple, and if you can change your spark plugs you could do it. A leak down test is a little more involved, but still isn't very difficult.
