Newbie here....getting another TOY...91 awd turbo 4dr legacy

hey...im new here..and to scoobys. my gf has a 90 legacy, its been in her family since way before weve been dating (2yrs). i hate it because its in terrible shape and everything that goes wrong with it, i get stuck fixin. and as you can tell by my sn...im a ford guy, but ive learned alot by doing all that work on hers. but i really admire that it is still running with almost 300,000 miles, and it was very poorly maintained until she met me. and she loves her dang scooby, and she wants another, just like it.
so, i saw it fit to find one we could both enjoy.
anyways..we are getting ready to purchase a 91 turbo awd 5spd legacy to replace her heap. and im excited. a new toy...and its got boost and awd.(the things my stang could do with awd) but anyways...ive got a few q's.

what is the difference in all these be, bc, bf...im not sure if thats exactly right, but im sure yall will know what im taking about.

what mods are available for these cars. it will be my gfs transportation mainly, so we're not trying to wring major power out it. i was thinking intake, intercooler, boost controller and full exhaust. nuthing crazy, i dont want her hurting herself.

i know they are factory rated at 160hp, this seems a little low considering that the n/a engines are rated at 130. and they are pushing 8.7psi of boost arent they. well...how accurate is that rating?

and how reliable are they, i know hers was pretty reliable up until a few mos ago, but its time for it to go. i believe this car has approx 120,000 on it. what can i expect with the awd turbo?

how rare is this car...ive never saw one personally, although i new they existed. does anyone know approx numbers on this car
and finally, what should i look forward to....like, what will probaly go first, what will need replaced and the likes.

The 91 turbo sedans are probably the most rare out of all the turbo sedans. They pretty much all had a rear LSD for that model year.

The BC-BF refers to the body chassis code. BC- is the code for the 90-94 sedans, BF is for the 90-94 wagons.

Stock hp may only be 160 hp, however torque is around 180 something.

These cars have probably one of the strongest subaru blocks ever to come stateside.

I'd suggest just removing the snorkel in the fender, and getting a drop-in k&n filter. There really are not any good intakes for these cars.

Intercooler is a must if you want to crank up the boost, which can be done relatively easy, assuming you can control the intake temp charge.

180k is not super high mileage, but it's still good amount.....what they asking for it?

i hadnt updated this since i found out....but the car has 180,000....but the engine has only 74,000. and the guy is asking a little uder 2gs for it.
thaks for the info regarding chassis codes and such...i was a little lost there.
like i said..its gonna be my gfs car, so we arent gonna try to wring major power out of it (until i find her something else and steal it from her)
i was thinking....K&N, intercooler(of course), exhaust, and maybe like a boost controller/gauge, and a blow-off valve at first. Not looking to run any major boost for now.....maybe like 12psi, is that reasonable?...are these parts readily available for the old school turbo legacys?
could these mods produce 225hp? thats kinda what im hoping for out of it at first.....then after a rebuild......swap a bigger turbo, stronger internals, etc.....and see what i can really get out of it.

Sounds like you got a good plan, 12 psi with an intercooler should be fine although I plan on upgrading the fuel pump before I raise the boost. 160k and I don't think it's been replaced so I'm going to be safe. I hope you don't mind some fab work because there is a lot of stuff you can't get "bolt on" parts. The IC is going to take some piping ect. Not to scare you there is so much that fits off WRX and N/A Subarus that mostly fits perfectly.

im not afraid of a lil fab work. i read a few articles last night pertaining to putting the WRX ic on them, and they said it was relatively easy and fit pretty well
and ive also heard that i can use quite a few WRX/impreza parts (turbo/IC/some susp) rather easily..is this true?

Yup, subaru loves to reuse parts from other cars . . . although there are changes in performance, the fit of the parts is almost identical in all of their cars from 1989-present (with some exceptions, of course).

Seeing as you're only interested in some minor modifications, I can only tell you that there will be ALOT of untapped potential in the car (especially since the motor's not that old). My car has 180,000 miles on it, with a crapload of stuff on it . . . haven't been able to dyno it, but roadcomparisons tell me. . . It beats a stock mustang GT with plenty of room to spare (I only say this because you own a mustang and can figure out power potential from there - BTW, love the cars in the garage!!!).

Some people have done wrx intercooler modifications to their cars . . . lemme see if I can find the company I found a while ago that will do all the work for you . . . Here it is:

Turbo Legacies are extremely rare. I don't have numbers but I only run into a turbo Legacy every 6 months or so. I see NA Legacies every day.

If you find one that looks good, snatch it up, because you won't have a bunch to choose from (locally at least).

well.....the one i found wasnt local, i looked around for a while. but the funds for it never became available.....so sadly, i missed it. we know have the money and are looking for another one. we have found 2 or 3...but they all have very high miles. so we are holding off for now...until we find another nice one, cuz my gf's heart is set on getting one.
anyway.....wish me luck and thanks for all the info....ill be staying in touch with this forum for a while

thnx
