The GT Trans should work. You will have to change the clutch & pressure
plate,fluid lines I think the proportioning valve is different you might even
have to change the pedal cluster . Watch gear ratios,Your trans should have
a ratio tag on it.You might need the rear end. Just did a conversion on a 91
auto Legacy turbo to 5spd,we installed a 97 Legacy Outback trans and rear
diff,Pedal cluster,brake master cylinder and lines wiring up the trans plug
in the main wire harness was the hardest part around town from light to light
it will pin your head in the head rest, but she revs a little high on the
interstate. About 3300 to 3700 rpm as compared to 2900 rpm.

Every thing as per my previous e-mail.

Plus - On the NZ models (AUS models should be the same)the slave
cylinder is a slightly different shape, at worst you may have to buy
a twin turbo slave cylinder, these are hard to come by but in NZ
about $20.00 so shouldn't break the bank. The master cylinder and
slave cylinder apart from that are identicle to the other turbo
models, you shouldn't need to change anything else, but if you want
to use a twin turbo pressure plate they are more heavy duty than the
single turbo.

Was this a shadetree job or did you have someone do it for you?

I'm considering as much, but i'm concerned that the gears aren't up
to the torque from the turbo. I have a friend on his 2nd trans in an
RS with just over 80k miles. It's slightly upgraded, but not with
the kind of torque we have.

hmmm,

I'm very interested in your conversion. I have a 90 Legacy, non turbo FWD. I want to convert it to a 5spd. What needs to go about to do this. I know I'll need a new ECU, tranny, pedal assembly, and what not. I dont' really care about the hill holder. I don't think I have to worry about gear ratios, because it's a FWD. I assume the front transfer case and tranny are all one unit correct? I would like to do this myself, or have someone help me, as I don't want to get in over my head. My auto is most likely on it's last years, and rather than rebuild a slush box, it'd be nice to have a 5 spd.

Any help you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a 1989 Subaru Legacy N/A, with a cable clutch at the moment
which I have just done a twin turbo gearbox/clutch fit on.

If you are going to use a turbo gearbox, which are a lot stronger as
the gears are wider.

You will either need to change the gearbox cases to use your existing
clutch setup.

Or replace the cable clutch with a hydraulic clutch.

To do this you need: Turbo gear box of course (lol), turbo pressure
plate & thrust bearing, hydraulic master & slave cylinder, hydraulic
hoses and a Turbo clutch pedal.

To give you some idea of the cost NZ$1,100 for the lot (including
gear box) plus NZ$1,100 for the parts to fully re-build my twin turbo
gear box

Everything else will just bolt into the existing mounts/brackets.

Gear ratios: You will need to check your ratio's.

My N/A 5 speed gearbox is 3.9:1 and from what I understand all the
auto models like yours are also 3.9:1.

1989-1996 turbo models are mostly 4.1:1. This is an easier fit!!!

1996 and on are mostly 4.4:1.

Now the 4.1:1 ratio diffs have a spline with removable inner CV's and
the 4.4:1 ratio boxes have the inner CV's as part of the diff, so if
you go for the newer diff you may also need to buy a complete rear
driveline, as the axles are a different length to the older axles.

I was lucky and located a 4.1:1 ratio gearbox out of a 1994 twin
turbo, I just had to replace the rear diff with a 4.1:1 ratio rear
diff (because as mentioned above my old diff was 3.9:1) and not
anything else in the rear driveline.

The ECU should be the same. If you have or are planming on an
Intercooler you should get the clutch master cyl that is the short one
I don't know what year the one I got is it was on a shelf of a not to
well organized wrecker but it clears the intercooler. On a FWD I would
think your in pretty good shape.

The Legacy GT tranny I got was a 3.9 and I think all US legacys were
also. Driveshaft and all should fit but your right the clutch pressure
plate,disk will have to go. I left the Valve out on my retrofit and am
running a ACT clutch. A person can tell by the pedal that it is a
stronger clutch but work fine.

I did some research on the Legacy GT tranny and this is what I found.
The 99 GT and all other transmissions were changed for '99 some had
the standard bolt pattern but from sometime mid'99 on all of what was
called the version 2 transmissions 4 extra bolt holes were added these
will still work for a conversion. These transmissions have all of the
upgrades. The main difference in the turbo Legacy are the clutch and
the gears. In the turbo versions the gears were tempered and in all
others they were case hardened. They are all the same size and the
version 2 even with it gears holds up very well until you reach
400-450 hp and there have been a few failures of both tranny and rear
diff. I have about 8k on mine and it has worked hard at times but it
is holding up perfectly well. I wonder if the addition of the 4 extra
holes might have something to do with making the new six speed and the
five speed interchangable in production ??
