Ej22 swap wont start

Picked up a 92 legacy with a blown headgasket for $200 the other night. Motor had 259k on it so I decided to grab another one from a guy on craigslist who had one in good shape. He didn't really know much about it, he said he got it with his ej22t (which I also bought :P ) and I figured I'd just throw the 22e in until I had a long weekend to do the 22t.

Anyways, got the phase 1 n/a ej22 in (same engine it replaced) and it wouldn't start. Had spark, had fuel, cranked, just not starting. I pulled the intake manifold off from the new engine and threw the old one on to see if it was injectors, fuel rails etc, but still no start. Didn't have a chance to pull codes since it was about 12:30 pm, and I had to hitch a ride to work from a friend at 7. I will when I get home though.

My guess is that it's crank position sensor, which I fortunately have 2 laying around I could throw in this evening.

My other thought, is maybe the gear on the crank shaft (sorry for my poor terminology) which drives the timing belt has different sensor triggers on it? I'm really not wanting to tear it back down to find them all the same.

Before putting the engine, I put a new timing belt on and set the timing (done it before, know I did it right.) I also inspected everything visually and it all looked good. Anything else seem like it might cause a no start?

Welcome to the BBS.

If you have fuel and spark and based on what you've done so far, I'd really suggest checking the timing again. It's possible the belt may have jumped upon initial cranking. I know you probably know, but just to verify did you use the mark on the back of the crank timing gear?

Correct, used the notches in the gears lined up with the lines on the belts. I'll pop the cover off after work though and make sure everything's still lined up. While it's off, I'll be able to check the crank sprocket too, to see if the sensor triggers are the same.

Other then that can't think of what it might be... Brand new plugs btw, correctly gapped (and torqued to spec for what it's worth.)

ONE THING I JUST REMEMBERED: I pulled the cam position sensor off the 22t because the wire on my 22E got crushed to smithereens first time I put the intake manifold on :doh They looked identical and fit right in and the plugs were the same so I don't think that's it...

The crank timing pulley should be the same so that's probably not the case. The cam and crank sensors are interchangeable between turbo and n/a as with the rest of the sensors except the 02 sensor. Turbo has about 4-8 inches of wire lead, n/a has about 18 inches or so.

You say you have fuel, did you check the fuel lines when putting them back on the manifold to make sure they're in the correct location? I've done this a couple times, crossed the fuel lines by accident. One particular day I got so frustrated, I had to call someone because I could not figure out why my swap wasn't starting...

All phase 1 engines use the same trigger pattern for the cam and crank gears, so that isn't your trouble. I second the fuel lines as a good possibility, I've done it before as well.
