You didn't list your name so I can't greet you...
Hello, and welcome whoever you are!
I'm going to try and answer your question by proxy of your spelling of the
word "shift" and not shirt, or shirft. Additionally I will proxy subura as
Subaru. Sound good?
O.K. Firstly, the Camry and the Subaru are engineered completely
differently. Comparing the drivetrains (gearing, transmission, engine,
differential, axles, things that actually make the car >>move!) is more or
less like comparing a Humm-vee to a VW beetle converted over to a sand
buggy. The Camry is 2 WD, the Subaru is 4WD. The 89 Camry came with a 2.5L
V6, the Subaru you own now uses a horizontally opposed 2.2L. The
horizontally opposed engine (which will now be reffered to as a "boxer") has
very high torque at low rpm's (torque is, basically, the stuff that makes
your head and sholders snap back into the seat). The Toyota was heavier, the
Subaru is lighter (I haven't actually researched that statement, but I'm
confident it's true. Confident enough to post it, lemme know if I'm wrong).
The Camry was designed for the typical American driver who whose average
speed is somewhere between 30 - 45 MPH, and has an only slightly less than
catatonic fear of traveling at speeds over 80MPH.
The Toyota is designed to rev more smoothly (not as much snap) when, say,
pulling off the line from a stop light. Torque is good if you want to go
fast. Torque is bad if you want a smooth ride that will take you from A to B
in the most comfortable fashion possible. You aren't trying to set a land
speed world record to Safeway and your vehicle will only go faster than 45
MPH on the highways, where it will actually need the power charecteristics
of the V6 for the highway.
All this to say, indeed the Subaru does shift differently. Likely the
"hardness" you feel is related to the fact when you drop that clutch (left
pedal) the engine in the Subaru "grabs" the thing more aggressively than the
Toyota does. Now, if you get a grinding noise when you shift, THAT is a
problem.
Mashing the pedal means "standing on it", "putting the pedal to the metal",
"flooring it" or depressing the pedal deeply in to it's designed range of
function.
Did any of that help?
Subaru enthusiasts like ourselves love our car because the boxer engine is
very quick off the line. Because the engine sits lower in the car, it
handles more like a sports car in the curves. Last but far from least, it's
4wd makes it a natural choice for driving in challenging conditions, like
snow, rain and gravel roads.
Welcome!

If you do this, be sure to examine what the fluid in there looked, smelled
and feeled like too.
It shouldn't be brown, hues closer to pink or red are better.
It shouldn't smell burned, and there should be quite abit of the stuff. If
you get less than 5 quarts out of the thing, it was very low.
It should feel slippery and thin, not thick and sticky.
