Newest 5MT with a speedo sensor?

Hello every one!

I come today with another odd but maybe useful question.

What is the newest year of subaru 5MT you can buy WITH a speedo drive IN the trans?

From my research i "think" its from a 2008 forester.

I say that because that was the LAST subaru to be old book subaru really.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Tom

I don't know but, my roommate (who used to work at a dealership) said you just have to swap that case half with one from the older style tranny.

I know my 05 impreza transmission has a speed sensor. It's been a while but I think 08/09-ish is the last of the ones that can have a sensor swapped into them.

Hmmmm swapping case halfs sounds interesting.

Not tooo sure i want to be pulling apart gear boxes for that really.....

I said 2008 forester tho because the car is the newest/oldest subaru with all the old bookparts.

engine, suspension etc.

I have done many MANY clutches on subaru's in my time. Just really have not checked if the cars speed sensor is on the case or not.

And yes i know on the cars that DONT have speed sensors on the case DO have a hole there. Its just capped off

Also.....

What is the LAST year you could get a 5mt with stub axles in the front diff???

For some reason i keep thinking 2004 for all models?

My dads 2004 legacy had them.

My good buddys 2004 impreza RS had them.

Also.

Can you just stuff in stub axles if you like into a newer trans????

04 was the last year for stubs, and yes you can stuff stubs into the newer trans, but you have to swap the seals and use 04 sti stubs. Alternatively you could use 05-07 impreza wagon axles and knock the abs tone rings off of them.

OK!

Upon pulling up some research, i have found that you CAN get the 5MT trans out of a 2007/2008 forester WITH a speed sensor in the side!

WHOOT!

So.

The issue know is the front drive axles.

Why do you need front drive axles from a 05-07 impreza wagon? Im guessing the track is wider?

What i can tell there is NOT cross ref. for them axles. Its JUST for those impreza wagons?

And yes i know cars past 2003 HAVE no stub axles.... Im not dumb!

Any your probably thinking..... Why do you want a trans from a forester???

Well that vintage of newer impreza never came with 4.11's, like the older 2.5RS did.

The forester did and still does!

So.

My final question.

Why do i need to use 05-07 impreza wagon axles???

Why cant i just use 05-08 forester axles?

Thanks

Tom

90-99 legacy front track width is 57.5", 02-07 impreza wagon track width is 57.5", 04-08 forester front track width is 58.9".

Ahhhh! Thanks 86BRATMAN!!!

You know i would have never thought that the front track was different between a impreza or forester!

Thank you!

No problem man, it's the same reasoning as to not using impreza sedan axles. Except the forester is roughly the same width as the sti, making the axles that much longer.

OK

So the newest trans YOU can get from subaru thats got a speed sensor hole in it, ALSO is 4.11 is:

Image

Thats my new trans

The ty755vc7aa is from a 06-07 forester NONE turbo.
Also the same trans from an 08 none turbo forester is the same......... Just cant order that one?

SO this leads me to my axle Q's
I "can" get OEM axles from a 05-07 impreza wagon BUT they cost an arm and a leg.....

SO rockauto has some Cardone's for much MUCH cheaper.

CARDONE SELECT Part # 667363

Has any one used Cardone axle before????

I would like some input BEFORE buying these axles hopefully

Thanks

Tom

I have used Cardone axles on my Legacies and my 1990 Toyota Camry with good results. I find getting re-manufactured axles are better than the new Chinese axles. The reason being is quality control, and you have a higher chance of getting an OEM axle back (you will on occasion get a Chinese core reman). The Camry had a left axle replaced by my Grandfather when he owned the car. He used a new Chinese axle, and I ended up replacing it the other week from the CV joint blowing up (made a nasty sound when it went lol). I replaced the passenger side on the sedan with a new Chinese axle, and had a nasty vibration at around 55-65 MPH from the axle being off balance. I have had zero issues with the remans vs the new Chinese axles.

Yes.....do not use the new Chinese cv axles.

So.....

No cardone axles then..... or any after market?

I see why tho you will never buy an aftermarket axle now.....

Its sorta a crap shot or waste of money then.

Im just SOOO torn on the price for one remain axle.....

I work at the local dealer, i get parts cost.

2006 impreza wagon as a ref. car.

The remain axle WITHOUT a core is about $250........

A brand new one $400......

THATS NUTS!!! How do people afford these cars!!! LOL

Still dunno what to do!

Thanks for the input tho!

Have you looked at places like www.cvaxles.com for a reman axle?
