RobTune issues/questions?

Hi guys,

Been awhile since I posted. Just finished the 20G swap, and have been enjoying having my car back after it's been down for 6.. errrr 7 months. But shes back up and running! :)

So, some backstory. I had the 550 RobTune installed with the 22T engine with the tandem igniter spark conversion. I pulled the 22T out and dropped the DOHC closed deck EJ20G in and swapped the 550cc injectors over, same turbo too, which luckily was ALL plug n play and it runs with only a few issues.

1) it runs like absolute shit when its cold, you push the throttle and it falls on its face and will die, I gotta let that thing warm up for like 15 mins before I can drive it because the throttle is just so bad. If I'm in a rush I can feather the throttle to get it up there and drive it, but if I push and hold the throttle a bit it will slowly like stumble it's way up the RPMs... idk it's weird, haha

2) it idles at like 12.8 AFR, and that's pig rich. when it's hot it will idle the normal 14.8 half the time but a lot of time its below that.

3) my AFR's in boost never seen to drop below 11.5 which, before it was like 10.5 So a little on the lean side, not really sure if that's a bad thing.

4) when idling, it pops from the exhaust. its like.. idleidleidlePOPidlePOPOPidleidleidlePOPidlePOPpidlePOP, never did this on the old 22T, it idled really smooth. Honestly it sounds kinda cool.. BUT I know that's probably not right haha. Also, it will do this weather it's 14.8 idle or when it idles rich at 12-13.

I'm wondering if the tune might be different? Is there difference between the 22T and 20G robtune? Or is it all the same? It runs pretty sweet when the cat is hot and it pulls really hard in boost.

ANYWAYS! Hope yall got some answers or ideas to share, I know you guys always do. PS Josh, feel free to move this to another section I didn't know exactly what category these belonged in.

I had a similar problem with the AFR's and hard start up. it ended up being a loose ground wire that was connected next to the fuel rail on the driver's side of the motor. I tightened that up and all good.

O2 Sensor?
Good green label MAF?
Check codes?

No codes.

Knock light likes to flash, happened with old motor also though so idk.
I'll try a new O2 sensor, mine is probably real old.

^..CTS???

Checked your KS for cracks? Some of these are overly sensitive.....IMHO.

So I found a major problem, my throttle body was loose... like it only had 3 bolts and they were all loose so I tightened them back up and the car finally boosts and pulls hard, but my lowest AFR at 15 PSI is 12.4....

I'm annoyed lol. The car runs good besides that, my fuel pressure regulator is definitely getting vacuum and I don't have any other leaks. My CTS looked good and I hit it with the wire wheel just to clean it up before I installed it.

I'm gonna try an O2 sensor and a knew knock sensor as well.

Being a pest - I am - but that CTS needs replaced - not 'cleaned'. Yea, it's a PITA but they're cheap.

And the way I understand it, the 02 won't help in boost only @ idle/cruise. In boost, you're running off Rob's tune.

Still probably should replace it if unknown age.

Not too hard to access, so I might go pickup a new one. See what changes.

Well, made some changes. Last night I was doing pulls at 14psi at 12.0/12.1 AFR, well I turned my boost controller up to 18/19psi and now my AFR's are in the 11's and where they should be. So, that's weird, but not my lean issue isn't present anymore. But I am experiencing cutting under boost, if I floor it , it starts to cut out in the top end. Not sure what's going on but I'm gonna try plus and new wires. Next project is to go COP now that I have heads that support a coilpack.

New problem. It's worse after changing plugs. Used
copper v powers gapped to .030 and the problem got worse. Like you load the throttle and the car just starts sputtering...

Try gapping them to .032-034, or .028. Increasing or decreasing the gap may help you out a bit.

Well now I have found my TPS sensor is not functioning. Adjusting and even unplugging it has no affect on my car. So I'm going to swap the TPS because I found it was cracked.

That might be the whole problem. Are you adjusting it by the fsm?

I put a new TPS in and check the splice for the connectors. I am going to pull my TB off and get it on the bench and get the TPS dialed in. Then see what happens, and possibly test the wires back to the ECU. Although ever since I installed the RobTune, the throttle has been sticky. You push it and there's slight hesitation. I'll report back once I get that set and make sure it's to spec. Never adjusted one and kind of scared haha I'll figure it out tho.

Noticed I can boost up past 10 PSI but only half throttle and it starts to cut past 3500rpm. Something's weird.

I hope you get it figured out. If you are uncomfortable with making the adjustment, you can always grab another complete throttle body and throw it on.

Check for:

Intake leaks.
Start up car and let idle poor or good does not matter.
Spray intake cleaner or something super flammable on the intake areas.
IF the rpms changes or dies you have a leak.

Maf check.
Again start up can and idle poor or good does not matter
while engine is running unplug the maf
If car dies your maf a is OK
If car continues to run you maf might be bad OR some other sensors are at fault.
02 sensor or CTS or something along those lines.

Check fuel pressure.
My car ran very VERY poor because my fuel filter was old and plugged even with a 255 fuel pump.
Car ran fine, just not idling.
I turned my old filter over and BLACK crap fell out!
NOT GOOD!

Spark plugs.
I had mine at .32
Car no happy. Pedal leggy
Put plugs to .28
Leggy pedal GONE.

Possible ignition issue?

I know on waste spark GM's you can swap wires between companion cylinders and the car runs.
Not well but will run.

NOTE:

When I performed a ROBTUNE swap into my car i messed up the ignition wiring some how.
I had 2 wires in the wrong places LOL!
Car run just not idling at all LOL!

Also

any CEL???

For fun i disconnected my 02 sensor last night and drove the car around a bit.
It seemed to not care

I disconnected the CTS.
CAR HATES to be cold when that is disconnected
Just runs like a pig until hot.

HOPE that helps ya

Tom

WELL PROBLEM SOLVED

I gapped all the plugs to .028. Problem
went away. Not even the slightest miss now. So weird....

Well issues coming back. When I get into the throttle real hard close to WOT in the high RPM's it feels like it cuts out. It doesn't really pop it just kinda does a slight buck. UGH SO TIRED OF SMALL ISSUES lol. Gotta love it.

It sounds to me like a coilpack or plug wires. You should be able to run a 0.032" gap without ignition cutout.
