Coat your cams!

Post by Imprezive »

Back when I did a lot of work on Spec Miatas here in California there was always talk of "coating" engine, transmission, and differential internals. I never knew what this coating was, and I doubt anyone else did either. I'm sure some of you are aware of it, though.

Anyway, I'm doing a Rhetorical analysis of a scientific Engineering based article of my choosing for a class, and happened to find this article which I thought was pretty interesting:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 9X06001484

Its a short article and offers up a cool result. The catch I thought was interesting is that the different lubricant used drastically reduces the friction coefficient when using the ta-C type DLC coating. Anyone have experience using coatings for engine parts?

I have had a few things WPC treated. One was a new gear set for a guy with a modded LGT that seems to still be holding up. WPC can be used on bearings and other engine parts as well to reduce friction. It's like shot peeing, but with very small particles:

And then there are a few pistons that come with coatings, like mahles and the skirts on cosworths. They tend to wear off after awhile though. I think DLC is more durable?

lol, typos are fun

I haven't heard of WPC until now. That seems pretty cool!

It appears to be something similar to work hardening a surface, but on a very small scale. This leaves the surface smoother and harder.
