Ok when connecting the two black connectors together (super difficult to find), I get one long flash a delay then I get another long flash a delay then 2 quick flashes.
What is the code? It can't be an 11 can it will car run with bad crank sensor signal? And if its a 12 what does that even mean or do?
So I don't understand what its reporting.

Thanks

From your description, it sounds like it's flashing a code 22, knock sensor, which is common on the first gens if it's the original sensor due to brittleness/breakage in the harness. The following link to DLC's how to page should clear it all up:

Wouldn't that be a quick 2 flashes then a short delay then another quick 2 flashes?

If memory is correct I think I changed the knock sensor back when this engine was put in the car.

All codes are two digits. Long dashes represent the tens, then the short dashes represent the ones. Code 22 would be long flash, long flash, short flash, short flash then repeat. Hope that makes sense. Did you happen to pressure wash the engine bay prior to throwing the check engine light? It's documented that water tends to pool on top of the block in the space where the knock sensor is attached, partially submersing it, which has been noted to lead to early failure of the sensor.

No to washing.

regardless...the code is 22. BUT that is the 'stored code'. Read the above link to get the ACTIVE/current codes.

...and grab a 12mm socket, long extender and remove the KS and check for cracks and/or wiring issues....the wiring also fails on these oldies - where they connect to the harness.

And Why are you checking? Is the CEL on??? Car running poorly??

CEL is on and wife says it goes out when pushing hard on the accelerator going up a hill on the freeway.
There are signs of mouse or squirrel debris on the engine and under the intake manifold, blew a lot of it out.
Engine had a miss plugs pretty much fixed that, CEL still on though.

Okay think this is finally resolved, ECT was bad, and just found a nice mouse chewed knock sensor wire, found other wires chewed on too but to fix would be likely pulling the intake manifold, so hope that lasts. And yes replaced the knock sensor.
