I have a 2001 Subaru legacy outback that I have been driving. but now the transmission suddenly stopped, as in I pulled up into a parking space and went to leave and it, is like there is nothing there when I shift it through the gear selection range. I have no idea what to even check to begin looking at this issue ive checked all the oil level and its good and it appears not to have any broken lines going to or from the transmission, but beyond that I don't now any input would be appreciated.

Hi,
As this is an '89-'94 forum, you'll want to hit up the others, like https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum (which you may have done?).

Does the AT Temp light flash or the CEL come on steady when 1st started? If so you need to get the CODES read - search online for a 'how to' on the Trans codes (TCU / TCM) and get yourself a cheap <$20 code reader for the engine stuff.

If you don't get any codes from the TCU or ECU then it's likely something mechanical in the transmission and would require at the very least the AT's oil pan dropped to investigate further.

Thank you i did a little more looking and, i started the car and shifted through the gates and they engaged but the engine is also missing and sounds like it had a rod knock but i was able to drive it throught it should hardly seem to have any power and line the transmissions was struggling to build up to shift to the next range. But i am not really sure if it is slipping or just struggling because of the engine

Do RPM's rise and you don't get any movement or are you unable to get the RPM's to rise?

That sounds more like a motor issue then transmission issue.
