93 legacy tailgate light on when it is closed and off when open

Hello!
This car is a 93 Legacy wagon and it was painted three weeks ago, the guy did had to replace the rear trunk door and probably did a bad electrical job.
what should i look for to fix that?
it looks like it works inverse, it shows a open light when it is close and off when it is open

My suggestion would be to try and follow the tail light wiring harness and/or remove it to look for where it was cut and spliced and/or see if you can find where there may be a pinch or spot where the harness wires are exposed.

Sorry, I misread your post and thought you said taillights. I would suggest removing the tailgate light and look at wiring harness and see if you see a spliced wire or anything that looks out of place.
You can use the wiring diagram from the 90 Legacy manual I have on my server.

After you unzip it, go to page 28 of 82. In the bottom right corner you'll see luggage room light. After looking at the diagram the first thing I would do is see if the light assembly can be installed in a reverse manner as it appears there's a diode in there.
