Coolant return hose

Hello everyone,

I have a 1992 Legacy GT and the other day my check engine light and my radiator fan turned on. The car also smelt really burny. The radiator fan now turns on anytime I put the car into accessory mode. I had a look in the engine bay and I saw that the coolant filler pipe was well below the low level. I also noticed that there was a hose on top of the pipe that wasn’t connected to anything. (I’m not too sure how to add photos on here). But there’s a little plug bit on the radiator that I believe the hose plugs into. Could this be the reason my check engine light is on?

(Also, I know this isn’t really an intercooler problem but I couldn’t find a topic for radiators)

If the fan is coming on with the car cold your coolant temp sensor is broken or the wiring to it is broken. It's on the rear passenger side of the coolant crossover pipe under the intake. It's the one with multi pin connector on it, not the single pin one which does the gauge.

Welcome to the BBS.

Agree, you should look and see if the wiring to the coolant temp sensor is still good or if the connector possibly came off the sensor. You can also check the wiring from the connector back to the ECU to ensure it's good. if all that is good then replace the sensor. They are around $20.

Also, going to move this to the engine section.

FWIW these cars are pretty well wired and you almost never see problems with stock harnesses. My money is on sensor.
