I am soooo lucky.. i just located another 92 Legacy Turbo for 7900
$CAD 5 speed in Vancouver. Since this one is a private sale, what
should i look carefully at to make sure the car is fine? I bought my
last one from a dealer, so i trusted them and didn't really looked
carefully and it held up just fine.

The car i am looking at right now has 169K KM, i test driven the car,
engine seems to be ok, brakes a little bit mushy, had to step on it
really really hard to stop the car, ABS doesn't even engage, i guess
brake pads are gone? The transmission seems to be fine, my old one
sometimes grinds when i shift into 3rd when the gearbox oil is
heated, this one doesn't seem to have any problme after a 20 minute
test drive.

The problem is that it makes this rubbing noise when its just
rolling, not sure whats rubbing, maybe brake pads? handbrake? hope
its not a wheel bearing. also, it makes a vibration noise that sounds
like metal hitting against metal under the car when it goes over
bumps or when the car start from a stop.. maybe heatshield? exhaust?

It could be just the brake pads, but make sure the fluid is up and
that it's not tar.

That rubbing could be either the brake pads or perhaps the
wheel bearings. Make sure you take it to a mechanic and have it
looked over.

I have that same rattle, i'm pretty sure it's just a heat shield.

Check the VIN # as the same as the Engine!!
Check the history of the car;
Check any leak on the engine;
Check the tires for alignment;
Check the CV boots on outside, if you do have chance, then check the
inside too;
Check the body work;
Check the Sunroof leakage;
Check the A/C;
Check the power steering pump and reservor;
Check the visible belts;
Check the rear defogser function;
Check the suspension;
There should be some more to check, but I'm not quite remember but I
hope you could get the Turbo man!!!!

ABS should work whether brake pads are worn or not. Check the fuse.
Make sure the timing belt was replaced at 100,000km.
Check for service history.
Rubbing sound mmm don't think it would be the brakes. maybe a
wheelbearing...does it get worse when speeding up... does the sound
increase\ decrease with vehicle speed or stay consistant?
Going over bumps.... maybe exhaust, does it have it's std exhaust or
aftermarket. I doubt whether the std would cause problem. Could be front
swaybar links, grab hold and check for play.

Thanks guys, the timing belt is replaced at 100000KM according to the
owner. The rubbing noise is very minimal, so i could not hear it when
i close the windows or when i speed up, the wind noise would just
cover it up.

Yes, it still has the standard exahust...

Ben, do u know where is the engine VIN located? also, how to check if
rear defogger works without fog?

Maybe i should just bring the car to mechanic for a check up, so
things wouldn't be overlooked and things are more easily acessible..
it would be worth the money i guess.

I have a 1994 Legacy Turbo Sedan with 78k miles and I have the same
rubbing noise that you are talking about, although mine is even more
mysterious. I can only hear mine when I roll it out of the garage to
wash it and don't feel like starting it. And the sound is not
mechanical, it almost sounds like the wheel/tire is out of alignment
or the bearing is so bad that the rotation is goofy and the tire is
tracking off line, but I can assure you that neither situation is
true because I have had the noise for years and the tires for years.
These tires (Big O Euro SXP's) are absolutely the best tires I have
ever had in my life. Great traction when I lived at 9600 feet in
Colorado, and great tread life (over 50k miles). Maybe it's just the
noise they make, but I can't figure out the noise thing. The only
thing that has ever gone wrong with my Subaru is the driver's side
seatbelt won't retract all the way when I close the door. I
occassionally get an ABS light when it's wet outside, but it always
fixes itself. And, it's interesting that you mention that your Subaru
grinds in third occassionally when the transmission gets warm. Mine
too, except it's second. The dealer told me it's something to do with
the Master cylinder/slave cylinder relationship and one of them isn't
fully releasing or something like that, when it gets hot (I'm not the
least bit mechanical, can you tell?). I told him I'd get the most out
of the clutch before fixing it. It only grinds once or twice a year,
and it's only when I rush a shift for whatever reason. Heck, come buy
my 1994 Sedan! I'm in Houston, so it's a bit of a drive.
