Gearing

OK, I need help from the group,

Has anyone changed the front differential gearing in their Legacy? I want
to go to a 4.11 out of a non-turbo legacy and add LSD to the rear of my
car. BUT, I want to keep the tranny in my car as it is stronger then the
non turbo cars (i understand).

Mark-

You have to have the 4.11 rear LSD to have the 4.11 up front. So anything
you get the LSD from will have the 4.11 that you're looking for. I believe
the '91 has what you're looking for.

The size of the gears on the turbo box are slightly wider than the
non turbo box, so yes the turbo boxes are a little stronger.

I take it you are running a 4.4:1 or 3.9:1 box then?

By the way,
4.1 has 9 teeth on the output shaft and 37 teeth on the differential.
3.9 has 10 teeth on the output shaft and 39 teeth on the differential.
4.4 has 9 teeth on the output shaft and 40 teeth on the differential.

So if you have a 4.4:1 box all you need to do is change the front
diff as you said and then the rear diff.

If you have a 3.9:1 diff I would give up that Idea.

Don't know what's going on here, but if you get this twice I am sorry

The size of the gears on the turbo box are slightly wider than the
non turbo box, so yes the turbo boxes are a little stronger.

I take it you are running a 4.4:1 or 3.9:1 box then?

By the way,

I have the 3.9, they made a 4.4???? What models did these come on? My
acceleration sucks with the rally tires on (ok, just not what I want on the
long hill climb sections or uphill accutes).

All 1996 Legacies & WRX's in NZ.

So in summary you will have to replace the output shaft with a 4.1
ratio 9 teeth one, this is reasonabily easy to do. You will need to
strip the gear box and remove the end nut from the output shaft and
the output shaft will then just drop out slide in the 4.1 tighten the
nut up and flaten the tabs on the nut. Replace the diff in the gear
box and replace the rear diff.

I think if you check on some of the later model Outbacks and Foresters
you will find a 4.56 and a few others, at the other end of the
spectrum the SVX had something like a 3.58. On the rear diff you can
make your own LSD out of any of the stub axle type diffs by finding a
'85-'94 Loyale with LSD these were 3.7s but the LSD unit can be
removed and installed in any of the other ratios this would give you a
clutch type LSD that from what I have found is stronger than the
Viscous type in the turbo Legacy. I have all the info on how to do
this as I have done several.

Outback wagons have 4.4 gears (i'm sure a couple other things, but i don't
know). I have a 4.4 rear limited slip in my posession if you want to go that
route.
