General info for people looking at doing mods to their RS Liberty or 1994-96 WRX. Same ecu.
I have a 1992 RS Liberty Turbo to which is fitted a full, turbo back, 3" mrt exhaust and a free flow air filter and inlet. Originaly i had a 'bleedvalve' type setup to increase boost to 17psi.
The problem I found was trying to get consistant boost, in ALL gears and then there were other variables, weather, altitude etc.
I decided to remove the bleedvalve and fuel cut that was installed, return the car to original, using the std solenoid and have a chip fitted to the ecu.
Well, let me say the difference is remarkable. Much more consistant boost, which is also coming in earlier, much better throttle control and feels stronger (more power) during boost. Apparently, the chip not only controls boost and fuel cut, it also has a revised fuel map etc, so it runs now at optimum for the boost required - something like that, I'm not really into the tech part so much.
Also, i have a switch installed so as to be able to run the car on the std ecu map whenever i like.
This chip is an easy installation and takes about 10mins..... longer if fitting the switch.
Anyway, for around $400, it's the best investment since the mrt exhaust. It also looks perfectly std.
If your interested i can give you the name and email address of the guy who makes these chips. He has made and sold heaps, with me being another very satisfied customer.

Rod, one question came to mind, more regarding your previous setup,
though. Since you've done all sorts of mods, have you also modified
the actual wastegate passage, I've understood that the gas passage is
very restrictive. I haven't opened up mine yet, but by opening up the
passage (I've heard it's almost 90degrees stock!) the gasses should
flow much better and therefore a more steady boost should be
achieved... as said, I haven't done this yet, but I certainly will.

Steady boost is but part of the story. It is the total overall effect of the
new ecu chip controlling everyhting, ie. good cosistent boost, better fuel
mapping, timing, etc, that make the car so much better. All the bleed valve
does is increase boost..... ,inconsistently might I add, nothing else.

I will second what Rod said. I went through adding boost and I think
that causes lean out and also a hotter charge to the intake as I have
been told that the Legacy turbo efficiency falls at high boost. I have
a water to air intercooler, high volume pump and a chip from JC Sports
now and am adding boost with a EBC and things are really getting
great.

I fully agree, just wanted to know if you've modified your wastegate
passage, or even thought of doing it. Just FYI, I have a chip on my
car, custom made downpipe and no-cat exhaust, currently boost is set
(MBC) at ~1.2bar, resulting in ~bout 260hp...
I have, however, had some problems lately with the car refusing to
pull steadily when putting down the pedal, but I tought I'd start by
changing the plugs, need your suggestions on this one, more in
another post...

I am running a EJ22t in a '95 Imprezza and also have a 12lb chromoly
flywheel, HD clutch, exhaust and cold air intake and I found that it
was starving for fuel at the high end and cured that with a high
volume pump and pressure regulator. I don't think that they gave us
anything extra in the fuel delivery department from the factory.
