Hey guys,

For the past few months, I have had some strange turbo noises. Under
full boost (stock) i hear a faint rattle (sounded like something is
off balance). Last night I heard something worse, under full boost,
I heard what sounded to me like a bad bearing (high pitched metal on
metal sounds).
I have 97k on the car and I bet on the stock turbo. Does this sound
familair to anyone? Is it time for a new turbo? If so, is it
upgrade time?...suggestions?

Sounds identical (high pitched screech as I accelerated hard) to when my turbo went, it turned out to be a worn bearing so the turbine was managing to scrap against the side of the housing, luckily I took it out had the turbo's bearings replaced.....turbo's are way overated there's only about 6 parts to it the hardest bit is taking it off as they get very hot and alot of the nuts and bolts are almost welded on.

shouldn't be to expensive as mine was quite cheap to be serviced £60 ($100)

I bet its one of your heat shields. My 91 with 177k on
the original turbo is still going fine. I can hear the
turbo spool up when I hit the gas, but other wise all
of the metallic noises that I hear, have been linked
to the heat shield or some other loose bits.
