Today while driving home from golf my RS Liberty turbo produced a series of loud 'ticking' noises. The car had 3 guys in it and golf gear, so it was loaded.
I was coming from speedup/merge lane onto the freeway, slight incline, flat out 3rd gear @ max boost 18psi. While at this max boost there was a series of loud 'ticking' sounds . Nothing like tappets, heaps louder, coming from the enginebay area. With the window open it's heaps louder.
Later tonight I tried to reproduce the nosie, which i did. Though i need to be flat out with max boost and underload going up a hill.
Anyone had this before or possibly know what it could be.

Rod could it be pre detonation. Or is it not that loud. That's about the only thing I could think, since you are flat out, and max boost.

Rod-

Did you check your oil? I have a pressure leak in cyl.2 and sometimes oil
leaks out of it. I find that when the oil is low enough and i get on the
throttle, i hear an insanely loud tappet noise.

How'd the golf game go?

yes i checked the oil. I am now pretty sure it's the engine pinging.
Golf..... had a shocker, very windy and still a little 'off' due to the red
wine and port the night before......

from the reply's i am receiving it sure seems that this diagnosis is the correct one. I will first try a new batch of fuel and go from there.
