I own a '90' Subaru Legacy. I have a cooling problem. I changed the
thermostat and antifreeze. It still gets overheated if I turn on the
air conditioning. When the car starts overheating I can turn on the
heater and the temperature will go back down to normal. I have also
flushed the cooling system. I read in the Subaru manual that the
cooling fans are two speeds. Has anyone noticed this? I have only
noticed one speed. Can anyone help me?? Thanks!

When you replaced the thermostat, did you replace it with an OEM subaru one, or one from an autoparts store? They are not the same, I found this out too. Get an OEM one if you didn't. Also did you burp the cooling system. There is a little black square peg on the top pass part of the radiator. Un screw that, and take cap off radiator, let car idle and warm up to get bubbles out, when it stops bubbling or warms up, put square peg on, and cap back on, and you should be good to go. These car's have EXETREMELY good cooling systems. Also may want to try a radiator flush if you think there is junk in cooling system, or if the antifreeze hasn't been changed in a long time.

fumes? have you checked your oil lately? What level is your antifreeze at?

Don't quote me on this, but in my searching for A/C info, I seem
to recall reading that a malfunctioning A/C system can cause the
car to overheat. Are your fans running correctly? The A/C
system should cause at least one fan to activate when running, and
if a fan(s) is already running, it should spin faster. (Thats the second
speed.) I'm not sure if they will go into the higher speed with the A/C
off.
