My Legacy has no power

Hi,
My Legacy is running really sluggish. I bought it used so I don't
know if it's supposed to run like that. Also, when I start the car,
the RPMs swing up and down wildly. Sometimes it stalls when the RPMs
swing too low. This happens everytime I start it, cold or hot.

I used to have codes 24 and 35 when I bought the car, but I replaced
the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (code 35) and both codes went
away. Could there still be a problem with the IAC (code 24)?
Could it be the MAF? O2 sensor?

BTW, the car is a 1990 Legacy L (non-turbo).

Thanks!!

One thing to check for is a leak around the intake manifolds. One way to
check is with the engine running, spray some water from a mister where the
joint is between the intake manifold and head. If it runs really rough, you
need to replace the gaskets. NOT TOO MUCH WATER! IE, dont spray it with a
water hose.
I had the same symptoms with my 2.2 Turbo.

John-the aformentioned leaking intake manifold happened to me at 100k but the car would barely run when this occured. At 150k, my IAC started going bad & that`s what your problem sounds like. I don`t know your mileage, but if it`s up there, & you`re `bucks-up`, I`d replace the IAC as a precautionary move. I`ve replaced a few `wear` items since about 130k & have never regretted it. The car continues to amaze me with it`s longevity, power, handling and good looks (I`m prejudiced!)---Good luck-: ) ROD (Az.)

Rod- My car has about 125k miles. How would I go about checking the
IAC? I'd rather make sure that's the problem since it's a $328
part. Does the IAC have an effect on the car when it's driving or
only at startup?

Ronnie- I haven't checked that carefully, but there are no obvious
signs of openings after the MAF.

Thanks for your help!!

Hmmm... but if you try and spray something like...hmm
Is it called "Engine starter" perhaps, it´s hard to
translate from Swedish to English :o) Well you maybe
know what I mean anyway. If you spray something like
that and the engine rpm raises then it´s surerly some
"thief-air" going in after the MAF.

John-My main problem was an intermittent stalling in gear when coming to a stop (I have an auto trans). A code should have been set, also. If you have a code 24, it`s most likely the problem. The O2 sensor should be changed at least at 100k if not at every tune-up (with platinum plugs approx. every 60k). This won`t affect your current problem, but performance & mileage will improve. The O2 sensors on our cars run about $80+ as they`re heated intentionally to help with emissions. DON`T be suckered into an aftermarket unit as they rarely help. Also, by platinum I should`ve been more specific: Denso or NGK iridium plugs are your best choice. Hope this helps a little more as I went through the same thing for awhile & it was quite frustrating!---ROD (Az.)

My Legacy has no power

Once the car is running, it never feels like it's going to stall.
The acceleration is pretty poor though. It takes forever to get up
to highway speeds. Standing at a light it idles fine. I don't know
if the previous owner changed the O2 sensor, but probably not. Do
you know if Bosch O2 sensors are okay?

The weird thing is that I don't get a code 24 anymore. Ever since I
fixed the code 35, they both went away. I'll chack it out tonight
and let you all know.

Thanks!

Rod question about the iridium plugs. Do they just add longevity or do they add hp....what's so special about them. I know platniums are suppose to last longer and all that bull. I never end up leavin plugs in that long, I've just got a set of normal NGK's in now. I've used bosch platniums, +4's, the NGK three prong sucker too.

I don't know how it is on your year, but I know the 90 Legacy has two diff O2 sensors, depending on manufact date. You may just want to stick with OEM O2 sensor.

My Legacy has no power

Josh-the iridium plugs add a little HP (based on dyno tests), longevity & are less prone to fouling. With the MSD unit, I`ve increased the gap about .0010" for a fatter & longer burning spark. The nice thing about the plugs is that there are no problems with them (as though they were stock ). This is`nt always the case with aftermarket plugs; I`ve seen the results. They are just one more little thing you can do to pick up incremental HP. Just today I switched over to Red Line oil for a little bit more of the same. Once all the fluids are switched over, I`ll let everyone know the results.---ROD (Az.)

Thanks for your help!!

replace the IAC as a precautionary move. I`ve replaced a few `wear`
items since about 130k & have never regretted it. The car continues

My Legacy has no power

Ok, I took out the IAC and I didn't see anything obviously wrong with
it. I cleaned it up a little and re-installed it. There was no
change in performance. The spark plugs look ok. The exhaust is
pretty rusted though. Do you think that if there was an exhaust leak
ahead of the O2 sensors that it would mess up the readings, causing
it to lose power?

Anyone know where I can get a stock exhaust system (complete) really
cheap?
