Well, it was time again to get new tires, and since i'd been driving
on used tires since i got the car, i figured what the hell...
Now used is a relative term, both sets of wheels i've obtained had
Yokohama A520s in 205/50-16 size. Neither of them were in stellar
treadwear status, though i got over 18k miles from the combined set.
Anyway, i got to researching tire brands and preferences in search of
a good tire that could be found on the inexpensive side, with good
treadwear rating, but could also hold its own on the autocross
course.
I found Kumho.
Some of the fastest STS cars in the Utah region use this tire, and
Brian Priebe won 3 of 4 challenges at the Wendover ProSolo running
these in an RS sedan that wasn't even his own. Their reputation was
growing on me.
Price? I opted to go for the wider 225/45-16 size for extra width
where it counts. TireRack has these for $88 each, a cool $12 cheaper
than the Dunlop W-10 and $25 cheaper than the A520.
I ordered them from Ray at Wheel Works in Salt Lake City and had them
mounted and balanced, out the door, for less than it would have cost
for shipping any other tire to me.
Impressions are very positive. The sidewall seems a bit stiffer, but
that makes it bounce less, which is good for me. The A520s were an
old, noisy design that i eventually ignored. It's amazing how quiet
driving is now, i can hear my stereo at speed, as well as the intake.
They're new tires, but already stick better than the A520s on
familiar corners.
Oh, and you might be wondering if they rub? Not yet, and i'm lowered
pretty good, albeit with coilovers instead of just springs.
Kumho. Do not look too far past these tires as your next ones.

New Tires: Kumho Ecsta 712
Depends on the size of the tires.

I run these tyres on My Subaru, and have recommended them to a number
of people with Subarus also, all love them.
I haven't managed to get them to aquaplane yet and brand new in the
wet were increadible, tried to get them to let go with the shinny
skin on the tyre but couldn't. They are wearing quite well and are a
lot quieter than any other high performance tyre I have run.
These tyre is have found to be better all round than Bridgestone
RE71's, RE710's, Yokohama A510/A520's M3/M5's, Dunlop W10's and a
number of top Falken models.
