Metal Bar on sunroof?

Yesterday because of the nice weather I decided to take the tape of the sunroof that the original owner, my uncle who had put it there to keep it from leaking when it rained. However after the roof opens 2-3in a metal bar pops up towards the front of the sunroof. Is it supposed to do this because I think it looks bad and it makes more noise when driving around then when I push it down with my hand while driving. The car is a 93' legacy touring wagon.

Thanks
Kevin

It's supposed to be there, and do just that, and it's terrible. Mine
has broken partially on the right side, so i never open it.

I know it can be removed and that Subaru may have made an external
wind deflector, but it would attach outside of the car.

I had mine off for awhile because I broke one off those little cast pieces
that attaches it to the car while trying to blow out my drain holes.I went
to the trouble to machine a new piece only to discover that yes, it is
noisier with the piece on. Maybe it is to keep bugs and other crap out of
the car? Idunnoh. BillC

It is funny, i've almost never opened mine because of that, and it'd
be quieter to leave it off!

Guess it's coming off, wind deflection or not.

Mine broke last summer. There is something like 6
screws that hold it on, I just un screwed them took it
off and put the screws back in with some sealant on
the threads.

Also if you look at the sunroof rails and see some
crusty black stuff that looks to be falling apart, I
think thats the sealant (sun and heat bad for seal=(
).

I haven't tried it yet but apparently if you remove
the headliner, pull of the sunroof and clean the old
sealant off then reseal it(caulk?) it should stop the
leaking.
