94 legacy turbo, engine identification, questions

Was there more than on type of EJ20 used in 1994 japanese spec legacy
turbos? Did they use a water/air or air/air intercooler? What was
there stock boost and how high can they safely be run?
If they don't have air/air IC's, then the engine I am looking at is
probably from a 94 J-spec impreza turbo. I knows the engine is a
close deck EJ20, and where its stamped on the engine it justs says
EJ20....no EJ20G or anything. How much boost do these run stock and
how much can they take?
