Question about brakes upgrade

Posted: Mon Sep 03, 2001 11:55 pm
by Dan Adamson
I have a 90 Legacy 'L' 4WD. I need to replace the wheel bearings and
I want to install better brakes at the same time. I want to install
better rotors than what came with the car. Also at the same time I
want to switch to some 15" wheels. Do I have to install new calipers
too or will the stock calipers work with the new rotors? Does having
the 15" wheel make any difference? I know it gives me room for a
bigger caliper but if that's not necessary I'd rather not.

Also, does anybody know of a good place to get brake upgrades for
this car? Is there somewhere I can look on the web to find out how to
tune up my car for better engine performance? (I see a lot of Impreza-
lover sites, but only found one about the Legacy)

Dan check out my site www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html as well as some of the other member's sites. I wrote up an article on brakes, mainly on rotors and such, it's in the notes and tips section under braking

As for upgrading your braking stuff. You will need new calipers to put new rotors on. I would suggest a set of 2 piston calipers for the front. That caliper comes standard on the legacy turbo, newer GT's and outbacks. So junkyard or reman's will work or you can rebuild a set. Next get a set of rotors that will fit those calipers. If you want to get better performance rotor, and don't mind spending the money I would suggest slotted, and cryo treatment. My article explains the ins and out between cross-drilled and slotted. Cryo is just something extra, but it does work. if you don't want to go that route, a set of larger rotors to accompany the new calipers will be fine.

got any questions, just holler, I've screwed around with my brakes more then I count.

Question about brakes upgrade

Definately you should upgrade to the Legacy turbo brakes. I think that both
the front and rear are bigger. I use Brembo rotors, while not cross drilled
etc, I think are pretty good bang for the buck. I have not been able to
fade them yet, even though I race with them (left foot braking on a
downhill run during a very hot day...). You also need a good combination of
pad and brake fluid to go with them.

As both Mark and Josh have said so far, it's a good thing to have the
Turbo brakes.

As for me, i already had them stock, so when i found a guy with WRX
brakes, i jumped on them.

Stock calipers, rotors and pads are very good when in new/reman
condition. I'm very pleased.

Question about brakes upgrade

Posted: Tue Sep 04, 2001 1:59 pm
by Dan Adamson
Well I have the stock brakes on there now and they don't seem too
good. They squeak a lot and are not so grippy after long trips. I'm
going to use this car for some road races around the Denver area, so
I need solid brakes. It's not a huge big deal that I have slotted
rotors or anything, just that I get consistently solid braking (when
warm). As I said before I'm also changing to the 15" wheels and
switching out the wheel bearings, so now would be a good time to put
new rotors if I decided to do that.

I am very happy with this car. It blows away other cars in
it's 'class', and it's surprisingly easy to work on as well. I just
think I need better brakes, considering the way I drive it. Maybe I'm
wrong?

Also, as for my other question (about performance tweaking), I wanted
to know what you think I can do, besides making sure everything is in
working order, to increase the performance of the engine beyond
normal specs? For example, a friend of mine has an Audi A4, and he
got a new computer for it and it increased the horsepower. It may
seem like a stupid question, but it's because my experience in that
area is seriously lacking. I can repair almost any problem, and make
sure a car is in tip-top working order. I can overhaul an engine. I
don't know anything about high-performance tuning though. I know a
little bit about suspension and steering and whatnot, but not enough
to mess with it on this car. Here are some of my questions just to
give you an idea of where I'm coming from:

Can I put a turbocharger on this car? There probably is room for one
under the hood.

Can I change the computer like my friend did to his Audi?

Is it possible to tweak the exhaust system so I can get more
horsepower? (I would rather *not* remove the catalytic converter,
because we have emission testing here and I think it would be illegal)

Where are the typical power-robbing problems to check for in this
machine? For example, I once had a Nissan whose choke would regularly
get so sticky it would cease to function. The car would still run,
but not very well. Anything like that to watch out for on the Legacy?

Can I change out parts like the clutch, driveshaft, etc., to racing
parts?

Thank you guys very much for your excellent responses. It has been
very hard for me to get any advice about this car. Most people I talk
to think it's a lost cause, but it's in perfect shape and has good
performance, and it's so comfortable and fun to drive. It's the exact
same car as Josh's, but stick shift.

BTW, how do I find the members home pages? The only one I've found so
far was Josh's site.

Question about brakes upgrade

Well it sounds really like you need a better set of pads. If you get a good set of semi-metallics, I think you would be happy.....think is the key word. I have semi-metallics, they are good, but there are times I want more.

If I were in your position and going to make a choice, and or had to do my braking dilemma over. I would get a set of Legacy turbo, GT, or OB rotors and calipers and put them on. They are larger rotor, but main thing is they are dual piston caliper. I would do that, with a good quality semi-metallic pad. I am running Axxis metal masters now, you can get them from paul eckland, primative motorsports, I've got his site address in the links section of my website. Other brand is Mintex, they bake their pads in an oven to get gasses out. Those pads are the shit....however I have been told they dust ALOT.

Now that is what I would do. Only thing I could think that would deter upgrading calipers and rotors is if you still had the stock 14 or 15 wheels. You need to make sure the calipers you get will clear the wheel, whether it be 15" or 16"

I use Carbon Semi-metallic (taxi cab type pads) and Ford brand DOT 3 heavy
duty. At $7 an can for enough to flush the entire system, its a good deal.;
