legacy engine cuts out

I have an 1989 legacy rs . problem I,m having is driving along
nicely when motor dies. will run roughly on idle but dies if given
any throttle. I suspect fuel problem and have removed petrol pump
and tested. seems to work well when wired direct to battery.
couldn,t seem to get power at p/pump wiring connection with ignition
switched on . replaced p/pump relay under dash and and car started
and ran well for 4 or 5 miles. then died again.
towed it home and thats where I,m at. appreciate any suggestions.

thanks Rob

I had similar problems where I would loose power all of sudden, engine sputter, if revs were up I could bring it back alive. If revs were low, the engine died. Then one day it totally died and couldn't start it again, when I did it I couldn't give any gas or it ran like crap. It did leave a code in the ECU, which confirmed my suspicion. The MAF sensor was going. Yours is exhibiting similar problems. It's not something to replace on a whim. It's $300 US. If you want to try and pull codes from ECU, instructions are on my page www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html under notes and tips.

You can't test a fuel pump like that, because they will work fine
until you put load on them. You will need to get someone to check the
fuel pressure.

We found that on a few aftermarket turbo setups that they were weak on
the top end and that the fuel pressure would drop. This means that
volume is involved also. The math on it looks like the factory gave a
fuel pump to us that would just meet the demands of the emgine so if
you have done or are thinking of any mods a high volume pump might be
in order. I confirmed this on my Legacy turbo in a '95 Imprezza the
other day I replaced the pump and really picked up some hp. Mine was
made by Walbro and is rated at 255 lph.

so any suggestions as to what type/brand pump would be best for a,
say, 92 stock turbo? would the Walbro do, and if so what's the price
on that?

Sure does, the wiring on a few models was found to be a little
different I will try to find out what ones they were I am pretty sure
that they were Imprezas. I will also try to find a source for you. One
of the people that worked for JC Sports is starting a new business of
his own and may be able to furnish them. I am glad to see this as he
is the person that made all the neat stuff for the turbos.

I had this happen to me a couple of times back. First
time was the ignition relay switch going bad. Second
was me accidentally disconnecting a vacuum hose when I
changed my air filter.

It looks like you can get them direct from Walbro. I went on their site but
I saw no listing for Subaru. Maybe yours is from another model, but is the
same? This is one upgrade I would like to do. At 12 lbs. of boost the car
feels like it may be a little starved for fuel.BillC

He is just starting to move in to a place sometime this week and will
be manufacturing parts and accessories and will be only doing
wholesale but I am going to see if I can work something out if someone
wants a part. I would have your credit card company charge back the
amount that you paid them on your order as I think it may be some time
before there would be any money from the company.

Al-thanks for checking out the situation. They have my $ in cash, not a credit card. But if the guy is honorable & could use some good customers to start out with, he`ll handle my $ as credit toward other item(s). Time will tell---ROD (AZ.)

He is just starting to move in to a place sometime this week and will
be manufacturing parts and accessories and will be only doing
wholesale but I am going to see if I can work something out if someone
wants a part. I would have your credit card company charge back the
amount that you paid them on your order as I think it may be some time
before there would be any money from the company.

legacy engine cuts out

Hi Rod,
That is bad news because this guy had nothing to do with sales or the
money, he along with myself are also out quite a bit. The company is
gone and I don't know what the settlement will be. I will keep looking
and if I see anything promising I will let you know. What is it that
you ordered ? ( if you care to tell).

legacy engine cuts out

Al-I had a `trans chip` that tied in thru the ECU to increase line pressure among other things. The one I had returned had cost me $235 & was supposed to work on the early (90-94) 4EAT trans. The credit was to be applied to a `series 2` chip that would work in our cars. I hope they have the decency to either ship it or return my money. Good luck to all of us---ROD (AZ.)
