ok here's the deal, this car was my moms, but it's sudenly become
mine, cuz she knew I'v really wanted it. It's a '91 legacy L Wagon.
180k on it. a while back when it had like 160k, it would smoke when
you came to a stop after driving at high speeds on the freeway for a
while. it stopped doing it, but then this summer, it started to do it
again. I drive faster then my mother does, so I expect it was my
doing. But even before that happened and to this day, every time I
drive it for more then 10-15 minutes, the car will smell of burning
something. smells kinda like oil... kinda like rubber. I have checked
all my belts, and they are all prefect. my mom took the car in to have
it checked out, and the guy claimed that the engine needs to be
rebuilt. it hasn't lost any power, and it will still do 110 on the
freeway. "I only did that once because I was late getting home, and
was in danger of losing the car" I have also noticed a burning rubber
smell if I push it a little too hard going up big hills, or messing
around going fast off the line. So what should I do? I will have time,
and space to rebuild the engine next summer, but as I am an avid
snowboarder, I need the car for atleast 5000 miles this winter. any
advice? any quick engine maintenance tips?

O.K. I'll bite.

Where's the smell comming from? Any idea? Run it around for a while and see
what you can figure out, as best as you can. First thing, check the oil
level. Are you low? Same for radiator. Is it an auto or a manual? If it's an
auto is the tranny fluid low? Does it pull to one side or the other when you
let go of the wheel when traveling on a level surface at a reasonable speed
(you might have a break dragging if so...)?

Other thoughts, you might want to have the acidity of the radiator fluid
tested. After traveling at 110mph and probably comming to a dead stop at
your home driveway, you might have blown a head gasket. Has it ever
overheated to the best of your knowlege?

If you don't know enough about any of these questions to answer them, take
it to a dealership and have them diagnose it. Then come back and tell us
what they said. For all the crap we give dealerships about workmanship, they
still have a pretty good accuracy rating for diagnosing problems. Not all,
most do... Better than the shade-tree mechanic you might have taken it to.
You're always best off to take it to someone who's certified on that
particular car. My $0.02

Ditto everything sambo said.

If you smell a rubber smell, something's got to be rubbing or burnin on the exhaust. Check around all the tires and such. One thing you could try is to put the car on jack stands all 4 corners and run the car, not too fast, but just run it, and see if you can determine where the smoke is coming from. There's only so many rubber things that can rub/burn on a car, so if you're sure it's a rubber smell, I'd start with stuff that moves and such.

Yea I get the burning smell whenever I come to stop after I've been driving and I have the vent on or what not. Before I changed the oil the engine would smoke from the back left aftering parking the car. When he had it diagnosed I think they said we have something blown like a headgasket as Samuel said.

One of my cars did this after an engine rebuild, when they assembled
it some pushed one of the seals in too far, causing the oil to burn
on the engine and exhaust. I would suspect this is the case with you
the oil is leaking onto the exhaust some where from a damaged seal.

If the smoke is coming from the exhaust, get a cylinder compression
test done.

Here's a cheap way to check your problem out. I had that too.
Get under the car and check for valve cover oil leaking unto the
exhaust.

More thoughts:

If you don't know what or where the valve cover is: it's an odd shaped piece
of metal that attaches to either end of the engine by the wheel wells. They
are located low on the engine, like lower than the battery, and you can
follow the oil fill tube down to where it's connected to the engine (the
tube that is). The tube is connected to the valve cover. The dirty, wavy,
silver piece of metal, on the outside of the engine that says "16 valve".
Now go to the other side and find the opposite one (easier to spot on the
passenger side) and see if you have a leak. Best evaluated when you are
under the car IMHO.

Unrelated: For more information about blown head gaskets and their symptoms
do a search on the archives. I think there's some information about how
exhaust mixes with the radiator fluid in the block and the resulting
chemical reaction makes something that smells really funky, but not
necessarily detectable to the human sniffer, in smaller leaks. Take the cap
off the radiator and see what you get. If you can't tell... get it tested. A
blown gasket is not the end of the world. But it's not a whole lot of fun to
fix. Esp. when you go to remove the driver side head (U.S. spec)...

BTW: Do you hear any unusual noises along with the smell?

Do you get the smell when any of the atmospheric controls are on? Like the
AC or the heat? Is the smell particularly stronger when you run those
systems? If so the odor is probably coming from the engine compartment, as
that's where the atmospheric systems draw the air from, on the left-hand
drive, U.S. model, it draws from the passenger side of the engine bay
(specific).

Yelp I think oil (from the valve cover gaskets) on the exhaust manifold
could be the problem! My dads 90 L wagon has the problem 295K
miles(never ben touched). knock on wood! HAA. Good luck. Dan

That's kinda what I thought it probably was. I just finnished
rebuilding a VW engine... so I kinda know what I'm doing with a wrench
in my hand. if I found out that it is the valve cover gasket, and that
the compresion is good... should I go ahead and replace the gasket
ASAP? how long would it take someone who has only done one engine in
his entire life? Is there anything that I could do while I'm in there
that wouldn't cost much, but would make the engine better? I know
that's vague... but if something comes to mind... I'd like to hear it.

IF there is a leak at the valve cover gasket, just replace it with a new
one. It's mindlessly simple for someone with your experience.

I had mine sandblasted and powder coated, but now I'm regretting it. The
battery is oxidizing the paint on the driver side cover at an alarming
rate... Next time, chrome baby!

valve cover isn't too complicated.. It's 3 bolts on each side. take off the
old on, put in the new one, bolt it back down.
