ECU code 24 (IAC)

Frankenstein Legacy

My '90 Legacy 5 speed AWD was bought with a 2.2 engine from a back end
crunched 'nother Legacy. It ran fine for awhile, then #1 cylinder lost
a land. I drove it for awhile on 3 cylinders, but eventually had
Strictly Subaru in Escondido replace it with a used 2.0 liter Japanese
engine. That developed a oil to coolant leak and Strictly replaced it
with another 2.0L. At some point the Check Engine light dropped out of
the back of the dash. I replaced it, but now the light is on
continuously with an error 24 in the computer.

According to Strictly the idle air control (IAC, which is what the ECU
is griping about) is working correctly. They also found that the wiring
harness is for an AT Legacy.

I'm in California and have to get the thing smogged in order to drive
it, so I have to find whatever's making the ECU spit codes and fix it.

Does anyone have an EWAG (educated wild-ass guess) about what could be
wrong?

1.How likely is changing to a MT wiring harness to fix it?

2. What make/model of instrument should I look for to pull my own
codes?

3. How might I reset the ECU to forget its history and start relearning
its current operating environment?

Looking for help
Ed

Check out my site, it has complete instructions how to pull the ECU codes www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html It's under notes & tips.

As far as resetting the ECU. Disconnect the neg terminal of battery, I leave mine disconnected for an hour, some do it for less time, but I like the hour thing. Then reconnect the battery. Turn off all accessories, Start the car, DO NOT touch the throttle. Let the car idle for 10-15 min. Or until it warms up to Normal Op temp. Then turn the ign key completely off, and that's it. Make sure you do the ECU reset when the car has been sitting for a while, ie. overnight.

Hope that helps

Josh
