someone correct me if i'm wrong here but, the maf sensor basically
controlls the fuel to air ratio correct? well then seeing how my maf
seem to be AFU then couldn't i, at least theoretically, somehow
disconnect the maf altogether, get a fuel pressure guage and an
adjustable fuel pressure regulator to do the ratio-ing myself? would
that make any sense? or am i just doing some wishful thinking and
will have to eventually pony up for a new maf anywho?

I wouldn't recommend it. MAF sensor I believe does more then just regulate air/fuel ratio. I can check, but I could be wrong.

Mike,

I think that the MAF sensor is only one of the guys that tell the ecu
how much fuel give, even with the MAF disconnected the engine can
work, not so good but it works. Basically the MAF tell the ecu if the
engine is full or low on air, but only an estimated value.
