Okay I've been on a small vacation, been lots of conversation
concerning turbos and intercoolers since then. Good stuff to come out
of it. What I'd like and I think would be beneficial for all of us, is
to have a upgrade path thats agreed upon for a bigger turbo and a
intercooler. Something where price, ease of installation, performance
and parts availability are all considered, resulting with a final
outcome.
I think our engines have huge potential, and the chassis can handle it
with upgraded suspension, and braking, resulting in a *great* all
around car for low $ input. I think to attain this goal the turbo,
exhaust and intake need to be replaced and a intercooler needs to be
added. Ideally I'd like to find this solution from mostly subaru
parts.
For the turbo the new wrx might be a good option because they are very
plentiful and will provide good low end boost. This might be cool too

based on a new wrx turbo.
For the intercooler I see benefits to both air/air and air/water. I'd
love to see whats really available. I think a well done front mount
air/air or a air/water setup would be best. A front mount air/air
would avoid the heatsoak of the top-mount location, and if its sized
well it shouldn't introduce a significant amount of lag. Air water is
more complex initially but if setup well it probably is superior but
would require more maintenance.
Intake I think is a restriction at stock boost levels, and will be huge
when increasing air flow. The MAF adapter Teagues sells
http://home.att.net/%7Eteaguesauto/motor.htm could be used to make an
intake fairly easily.
Exhaust will hopefully be covered by the subspeed groupbuy.
So with everyones collective experience maybe we can come up with a
eloquent solution to this issue.

Oh, I think a package or "staged" modification path for the Legacy
Turbos would be a great thing if it ever came to pass. But, I just
don't see any vendor or group of vendors who have enough interest in
it. Frankly, I don't know that a sufficient market exists. I'd like
to see just how many of these exhaust systems Subspeed is engineering
actually get sold. These cars are getting old and high mileage at
this point, yet they are rare enough that really competent mods cost
custom $'s. I just don't know if most owners, even those expressing
serious interest in upgrading, will layout the required bucks. So,
this leaves us kinda where we are, trying to suss out where various
mods can be found and trying to make bolt-ons for the WRX and newer
or Rest-of-World Spec Legacies fit the old Turbo.

BTW, The large front-mounted IC you described is conceptually similar
to one I examined at Subysports on an WRX. It still uses a top-
mounted heat exchanger to remove heat from the inlet charge, but has
a large front-mounted heat exchanger to remove that heat from the
coolant. This is an air/water system, however.

When I talked about a staged mod path, I intended to use parts that are
currently available. Such as wrx turbos and intercoolers, liberty
stuff, etc. It just needs to be documented once everyone chimes in on
their current setups.
So everyone, if you've done some significant mods, more than an intake
hack, detail what you've done. Include drawbacks, benefits, parts
used, final outcome and what it took to put everything together.
I think enough people have upgraded that it would be possible to get
some evidence together to point to specific solutions for upgrading.
Thoughts and input appreciated! I'll record everything, and then make
a site with the findings.

Hi, new to the group here.

I plan on doing a build-up on a Turbo Legacy for Road Rallies in the
Northwest and (more specifically) the Alcan 5000 this summer.
Hopefully a MT model will come available on the west coast by April
(no, I haven't purchased it yet) which will give me a few months to
tune and fix any weak parts.

Depending on the state of the model I eventually purchase, I'd like
to add additional boost and retro-fit an intercooler--my goal is
about 250hp.

It does seems like we're all in search of the same thing (more
performance) and I doubt there'll be any "new developments" for a
car that's 10 years old. Has any progress been made on this "staged
guide" to the early Legacy? It's a great idea!
