My two front doors are giving me problems. The drivers side door,
simply will not lock or unlock from the outside. The lock cylinder
just spins in place. is it just loose? or do I need to replace it? my
local shop quoted me $100 to replace it. Does is really need to be
replaced?

The pasenger side has a slightly different problem. When you go to
open the door, when you pull up on the handle, it makes the door lock.
so you have to hold the lock lever to get the door to open. I haven't
even asked about getting this fixed, as it hasn't really concerned
me... Is this a common thing? I would like to fix both of these myself
if I can.

I have experienced both these problems. The spinning lock thingy. The lock cylinder is fubared, what you have to do is go to subie dealer, buy a lock cylinder. It shouldn't be more then 20 bucks. You have two choices. You can either have another key for the drivers door lock, or take the lock cylinder to a lock smith and he can make your original key fit the new lock cylinder. To replace the original busted lock cylinder, you will need to remove the door panel, remove the two nuts that hold on the door handle. Then take out the old lock cylinder and put the new one in......should be a swap job. It's not that hard a procedure. I don't think it's worth 100 bucks.

The passenger side problem. It's sorta a common problem with the earlier legacies. What happens is the spring that holds the handle, it is clipped to a plastic piece behind the door lock button thingy. This piece breaks off and the spring pushes on the back of the door lock button. What you can do is take the door panel off, pull the door handle assembly off. Take a paper clip, bend it straight, and then in half into a loop, and then hook the end of the spring that was held in place with the plastic piece. pull back spring thingy until it looks like it is positioned properly, then bend the paper clip flat against the back of the door lock assembly, trim the pieces with a cutter, and reattach the door lock assembly to the door. Problem solved. I had the same problem this past summer in my 91 Turbo sedan.
With time the lock cylinder becomes weak and mine actually broke.
I replaced it with a new cylinder ($27 CDN at the dealer). It comes
with 2 new keys for that specific lock. I had to have the new lock re-
keyd ($15 CDN) at a locksmith.
On the passenger side, again with time there are plastic grommets at
the ends of the actuating rods that do wear out and in my case it one
came off and rubbed against the rod actuating to door lock. Re-align
these and you should be ok. The worst part about working inside the
doors is getting your fingers to the parts you want to work on. I got
my 10 year old son's hands to do some of it. Took him out for an ice
cream after. It was worth every penny =).

I keep forgetting that child slavery; errr labor; is so much more less
expensive to have help working on my cars then my buddies who want to be
paid with beer and pizza.
