My car died today. I was just finished going on a
short errand and the stereo shut off, then the wipers
were moving REALLY slow, then the car started idling
wierd and died. I think it's either the alternator or
the battery. The battery has been having problems,
and the battery light lit up last night as I was
coming home. At this point I think it's the battery,
but how do I check? If that's not the case, how do I
check the alternator to see if it's functioning
properly? I've got to jump it now because the car
isn't starting on it's own power, so I'm wondering if
I'll get an accurate reading from a voltmeter. What
else can I do? HELP!

I just went through this about 3 week ago. EXACT same thing.

Here's what you do:

Get out your trusty ratchet and size 10mm and 12mm sockets, medium
extension, 10mm open-ended wrench.

First, see if you didn't loose the belt. Is it loose? Missing? Burned? Then:

Yank the generator
Yank the battery

Take them both to your local Shucks, NAPA, Al's Auto Supply or Joe's
Automotive Emporium - whatever local shop will do the following:

Test the generator
Test the battery

In my case I had to replace BOTH. The generator failed it's test with flying
colors. The battery sprang a leak during it's test and wouldn't take a full
charge. Chances are you prolly just need a new generator. I think I was
working with the original battery...

When you get the results, either buy a new generator on the spot, or go get
a genuine Subaru component replacement.

Bosch shouldn't cost more than $100
Subaru Genuine will cost $299 (with core replacement) at the dealership

Don't ask me which is better. I don't know. I bought the Subaru Genuine part
because I'm so fly. An' thos' playah hate'ahs in the Hondas need to give a
bruddah a spot to pimp. Know what I mean yo? Boyeeeee!

Now let's say you can't find anyone to test the generator for you. Anyone
that's been around cars for more than a little while will tell you it's
prolly the generator. You guessed it yourself. When you get the thing out it
should not spin completely freely. For example, while I was waiting for the
clerk at the dealership to pull me a new one off the shelf, I could stand my
old generator on end and spin it on the pulley for about 5-10 revolutions. A
brand new one you can't turn with your bare hand because the resistance is
so high, even if you sandwich the body of the generator between both knees
and torque the pulley with both hands. The reason for that resistance is
because that's how generators make electricity.

I pulled mine and had the new components put in, standing in 38 degree
Seattle rain, about 40 minutes. Might take you longer, I hate doing work in
the rain and was therefore VERY motivated to get back indoors.

As far as I am aware it will be your alternator as you should be able to
drive a car without a battery once it is started.

this happened to me a while ago. After replacing the alternator and getting
a jump from a buddy of mine, the car ran fine. Still running on the Pep-Boys
brand alternator that i bought. i think it was about $150.
