How fast are Automatic Legacy sedans compared to 5-speeds, in terms of top speed? What about Turbo versions? I'd like to know the stock numbers.
Thanks,
Mark

Well, I have a NA Legacy Wagon 5MT. Before I got my Intake, I reached an unnoficial top speed of 127mph. Dont ask me where. Tat would be incriminating

How can you calculate the top speed though? Having one car that can reach 125 but it takes 2 minutes to go from 120-125 is pretty useless.
My auto wagon stops accelerating quickly at about 125-130

Ciper, Is your auto a turbo? If it isnt then wow! Cause Ive only gotten our auto non turbos to about 110 mph. By then they wont budge any quicker, only if going downhill. If normal 5-speeds regularily do 120-130, Then a 5-speed turbo must be pretty damn quick!

Non-turbo. It still had some acceleration left but it was too slow. I put a range because I dont know how accurate the Speedo is. It may have actually been down to 120 according to what some say about the speedo.
Still, no reason for the auto to be any slower than the 5mt. Actually Id almost think the auto to be faster, a planetary gear set with a locked TC should have less drag than a manual transmission.

I topped mine out at about 130 mph.......however that was with lots of crap in the car. I suppose if I got a new tranny and empty car.......I'd probably be able to get up to that again......that was in montana......however it does take a little while to do that.
I need more power.
I know on my auto tranny.......each gear goes up in 40 mph incraments........so I have a theoretical top speed of 160.....

hmm the fastest ive gone in my turbo was ~115. at that point it felt like it still had a lot of go left.
i believe car and driver had a figure of 129 mph top speed, drag limited, for a 93 touring wagon.
and that reminds me of another topic, does any one know the drag coefficent for our cars? ive searched everywhere with no luck. i think this to be important info and yet it is still left out of car reviews.

I've gotten my Legacy Sedan LS up to 117 at one point. That took about 15-20 seconds. Not bad considering its no a turbo

Eh, 15-20 seconds to get to 117?
The AMG E55 does 60 in 4.4 and gets to 125 in 16.1. That's Z06 fast.
5.5L, 470HP Supercharged V8.
Try disabling the RDF before your next run.

I let off at 134 mph and had all my windows down but it was pretty much topped out

Drag Coefficient is 0.33
This is for the sedan......not sure if it's the same for wagon.

my turbo sedan will shoot up to 105 wihtout any effort at all. very quick to break a buck. never gone any faster, but she's got loads left to give. for reference, I have a blled-type MBC set to 10-ish lbs, straight pipe axle-back, and a K&N filter. nothing big.
the wagons should go slightly slower than the sedans. that's just because of the extra drag caused by the wagon's sharp dropoff in back. creates turbulence that sucks. no pun intended. the sedan is still victim to this but to a lesser degree.

Bone stock performance-wise (bar the K&N air filter) mine hit 121 on the speedo in a short distance with plenty of power left, just ran out of safe road. This is with the WRX wheel/tire set up which is quite a bit taller. 64 on my speedo is 70 (tested on the road with my dad's car). Therefore the math works out 121 to be approximately 132.3 - I have yet to try open her up again like that with more road.

how'd you get 132.2 from 121.......when you're actually going 70 when speedo reads 64???
My speedo is off about 5 mph throughout the whole range....up to about 100 mph was about as fast as I could test on the road I was going.
There was less error at lower speeds.....like 10-20 mph........but even at 100 mph.....speed difference was still about 5 mph.
We were testing using a GPS unit.
I can see maybe 10 mph difference....TOPS.....unless you know something I don't....

He has the larger wheels/tires from a WRX.

It's a ratio. 64/70 = 121/x. Do a little algebra and voila, the corrected speed. That does not take into account factory calibrated "eagerness" of the speedo. So it was probably more like 129-130. But even so, are you saying my turbo won't do 130...

haha.
Oh, by the way, this was all done on a closed course with a professional driver. *disclaimer*

well according to
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
your ratio is 2.7% off for the stock wrx wheel/tire compared to legacy stock. this means that at 64 mph, you were not going 70 but really approx. 65.8 mph. so, either you dads speedo is off or yours is (not taking tires into account).
that would also mean that instead of 132.2, you actually went about 124.3 mph.
either way, it is faster than i have gone, mine would not pull past 115 on a slight up hill grade at night. this was with only a k&n filter and removed silencer, ngk plugs & wires. basically stock.

I know I've taken my car above the "indicated" 120mph mark on my speedo . . . kept accelerating after that and didn't dare take my eyes off the road after I passed 120. Car was pulling very strong at this speed

IVE GONE ABOUT 120 UPHILL ON I-80 GOING OVER THE HIGHEST POINT EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI ON I-80.CAR WAS STILL STRONG BUT WAS AFRAID I MIGHT WRECK INTO A TRACTOR TRAILER AND DIE

THIS IS A PRETTY FAIR GRADE PROBABLY 7-8% AND MY 92 TURBO LEGACY SEDAN IS BONE STOCK.AND AS STATED BEFORE IVE HAD HER UP TO ABOUT 134 ON FLAT.SHE STARTS TO HANDLE BEST ABOVE 70 I'D SAY,OR MAYBE I JUST FEEL COMFORTABLE AT HIGH SPEED

Mine's a 92 GT legacy turbo wagon 4EAT. The only mod is 2 3/4" exhaust with no cat and a medium coby muffler. Running on 96 octane gas it pulls hard all the way to 185kph where the ecu cuts and will cruise at 4,500rpm. Not sure what 185kph is in mph. I know 160kph=100mph.
She feels like she's good for another 30-40kph.
0-100 (0-60mph for our U.S. friends) with a full tank and my friend holding the stop watch is 6.7 secs up/down average. Thats on cold night here in NZ at an alt of 1000mtrs. Temp was 2deg C. Man hairdriers love cold air.
But now the AWD isn't playing the game it just spins up from stand still.

185 km/h = 115 mph
That's pretty much the same speed cut the newer legacies have.

Ok, for those that doubted my math skills before... at the dragstrip my speedo was reading 78-79 everytime I crossed the line. My official trap speed was 85-86. 79/86 is almost exactly the same ratio as 64/70. The dragstrip has timing mechanisms quite a bit more accurate than any GPS unit. That said, I was doing about 133 for 2 miles straight the other day. I was keeping a eye on my boost and a/f. Absolutely no boost creep or droppage and the a/f stayed way in the green. Temp needle didn't move an iota either. This was all uphill, by the way, and this is an amazing car.

1991 JDM Legacy RS, intake mods, standard exhaust, standard boost.....my speedo reads to 240km/h (150mph), she'll get to 220km/h (138mph) without ANY fuss & remarkably quicky.....from there she hits the areodynamic wall and the next 15km/h come a little slower - my record is 235km/h (147mph) & she still had some left.......god what would it be like with WOOHOO exhaust & more boost?!?!?!
