I recently finished installing a EJ20G turbo Liberty RS engine into
my '95 EJ18 Impreza L using the EJ18 stock ECU. I kept the throttle
body from the EJ18 because the throttle position sensor and idle air
controller connectors were slightly different. All of the other
sensors on the EJ20 engine plugged into the EJ18 ECU harness. The
engine starts, and runs too, but the engine shakes alot. The entire
engine shakes, not just a small vibration, its a full fledged shake.
Has anybody experienced this problem on your Libery RSs? The computer
is displaying error codes 34 and 36...I haven't been able to find
what these mean yet. What is causing this shaking?

Hmmmm I might have an answer tommorow I will be getting a '93 Impreza
with a EJ20G engine in it from a out of town dealer and it runs very
poorly and he wants me to straighten it out and get it running
well. They have been working on it for some time. What did you do to
run the coils? The 1.8l had a different coil system and the 1.8 ECU
will not run the EJ20 four coil system and that would explain the
shaking.

All I did was use the EJ18 ignition coil (a single unit) and spark
plug wires. The spark plugs screw into place and the wires were just
barely long enough. Could it be a timing problem? Thanks

Doesn't the EJ20 use direct ignition. The coil is right there at the spark plug. I'm sure the coil output for the 1.8 is not beefy enough.

engine shaking

I had to think about this a bit there is no easy way out I am afraid.
The problem is that the 1.8 and the 2.0 use different tpyes of
ignition. The 1.8 is a wasted spark or bank fire ignition and the 2.0
is sequential ignition or one plug at a time in a certain order. The
only thing I can think of is the solution that I am using on another
car with the same problem and that is to replace the ECU, harness,
manifold and manifold harness with the same from a EJ25l engine. The
only other alternatives would be a stand alone aftermarket ECU or the
original EJ20l Ecu and harnesses.

If one were to replace the wires with those of the same type, replace
the coil with a newer one and use the proper plugs for a turbo
Legacy, it *should* work.

The firing sequence should be the same, Mark has an EJ20 in his
Legacy Turbo with the stock ECU and no problems like this.

The turbo Legacy ECU could be tried chances are the 1.8 will run it
lean with no knock sensor. Thats one reason that the turbo models
suffer from poor gas milage the factory programmed a rich mixture in
to them to prevent problems.

I would tend to use the EJ20G computer. The EJ22T ECU does not work with the EJ20G, at least if you use the EJ20G sensors. I use the EG20G computer in mine, it was very easy to swap over. You need to swap over the 4 wires for the ignition and route these to the front left of the engine, to the wiring harness. As brought up before, there is also a difference in programming on these cars as well. I did have the extreme shaking as well and I sourced it to ignition. You will get better performace out ofthe EJ20G for sure.
Do you have the wiring diagram for both motors? I have the EG20G wiring harness diagram if you want a copy of it. Lay it out with your old motor to find the differences. Another reson for me to use the stock ECU was so I can go up to the Possum ECU from MRT as soon as I have the $$$. you can get a piggy back model or the full swap computer, this gioves you wicked control over your motor and a substantial increase in power.

Could I get a copy of the wiring diagram also Mark ? I have done
this conversion before using the EJ25 ECU with a few mods and it works

Have you checked fuel delivery yet Mark ? I have found that when I
installed a EJ22t in place of the EJ18 the fuel pump just wasn't up to
it. And when I installed a 255lph pump I could feel the difference.
This might some thing to keep in mind on all conversions it seems that
the factory gave us a fuel pump that was just adequate for the engine
and that was all.

engine shaking

Thanks to everyone for your responces/suggestions! Your right,
ideally I would be using the original ECU for the EJ20G however the
wiring harness is in terrible shape. The engine section of the
harness is mostly in tacked but some of the wires are cut and are
not useable. On the ECU end, the wires are cut an inch out of the
ECU. I have had no luck in finding an accurate wiring diagram for
any of the EJ20 models, so if you could possibly send me a copy, I
would be gratefull.

If I try to run the engine with the EJ18 ECU, is there a significant
difference in power of the ignition coils of the 1.8 and the 2.5? If
I used the EJ25 coil, would I still have the bank fire\sequential
fire ignition problem?

I don't think you will have much luck trying to use the EJ18
ECU for several reasons including that it has been tried
unsucessfully a few times. But using the EJ25 or the EJ20G ECU and
harness will cure the ignition problem. We have a Legacy wagon and a
Imprezza running with the EJ25 harness and ECU on the EG20t and they
are running very good. The EJ25 ECU is driving the stock coils on both
cars but we switched to the EJ25 manifold to get the proper sensors
for the ECU. I have that copy of the EJ22t diagram that you E-mailed
me about a while ago it is a copy of a copy and does not scan well so
if you would like to e-mail me your address I could mail it to you and
include the EJ25 diagram also.

ok, the files are not that big, they are (ready?) a scan of a printout from
an scan from the shop manual except the EJ20G which was faxed to my crappy
fax machine (personal) that was a scan from a manual and faxed from New
Zealand to here in Canada.
I have scanned them all and coverted to PDF format to conserve space.
Yikes!
I cant scan my EJ20T manual cuz it is in the manual still and I dont have a
flatbed scanner...
hope this helps.
