Last night I pulled the valve cover off of my presumably older EJ20 quad cam engine. It has a broken right side intake cam and broken head in the cam support area, so I have less to lose by tearing into this engine than the other one. This engine has a mostly smooth valve cover, the spark plug coils each have two bolts and I know it has hydraulic valve lash adjusters. The other engine has a bunch of horizontal fins on the valve cover and its spark plug coil packs attach with only one bolt. Can anyone shed any light on whether either of thest are open deck or closed deck? Any guesses as to whether the one with the fins and the single bolt spark plug coil packs has hydraulic or solid lifters?

Hardly any EJ20 engines have closed deck blocks. The later model
WRX's used Closed decks and a most STI models, and some of the 1989
EJ20 Legacy models. Basically you will need to pull the heads to
determine whether it is open or closed.

Again all EJ20 Legacy's and pre about 1996 WRX's had Hydraulic
lifters, and only the later model WRX's had Solid lifters.

205kW EJ20 twin turbo from late 96 had solid lifters, with over-bucket flat
shims as opposed to the WRX under-bucket pellet shims.

That is not what I have heard - I have been led to believe the later model
Wrx used an open deck block and the 1991-1994 RS Liberty in Australia had
the closed deck block. The RS has a stronger block than most WRX.

From what I have read....and understand. The early EJ20T engines.....ie 89-92 or 93 were closed deck. I'm not sure what year the WRX was introduced.....but if it were around 94 or 95......then it probably has an open deck.

Yes, this is my understanding also on EJ20 closed and open deck blocks.

The BC-BF were closed, and the BD-BG (late-93 in Japan) introduced the open
deck. The BD-BG then went over-bucket shim solid lifter in late-96 with the
205kW engine, mainly due to the major failures that were experienced with
hydraulic lifters and the earlier head design that was used til late-95
whilst trying to get a reliable 205kW from the earlier opend (B-spec)
engine.

The WRX thoughout these times were closed deck EJ20 with under-bucket shim
solid lifter, until about late-95 when they were open deck. If I recollect
correct, this also coincides with the introduction of turbo restrictors in
WRC, so I assume that capped horsepower and production efficiency enabled
the use of open blocks in production / homolugated WRX versions since this
time. However, I am guessing that the STi versions almost certainly would
have persisted with the closed deck to version IV, but as power ratings
declined and consumer demand increased the open deck was probably used.
Today, it is probaly only the version RA that is closed deck.

By the way the EJ25 heads from 1997 and one had large bucket solid
lifter over head shims, convert to on valve, heads that fit straight
onto the EJ20 Block, the only difference is the inlet ports are
smaller on the EJ25 heads so port them to match the EJ20 Block. A lot
cheaper than buying WRX or Twin Turbo heads.

Is that what you are after?

Trust me I have seen over 200 heads / blocks from ALL types of EJ20
engines.

Not all the Liberty RS's had closed deck, they ALL did in 1989 Models
but from then on they started to phase them out. So you can not
guarentee that ALL the 1990-1994 blocks are closed, you would have to
pull the heads.

Yes the RS block was stronger until the later model WRX's & STI's &
Twin Turbo as the blocks had to be stronger to allow for 205KW of
power. If they didn't used closed deck blocks on this series they
would forever blow head gaskets.

Note: the 1994 - early 1996 twin turbo's still used open deck blocks.

Twins, always have been and still are open deck, and Yes, the cylinders do
"move" around a bit, and Yes, blown head gaskets and run rear main
crankshaft bearings are not uncommon.

I am betting that the EJ25 heads use smaller valves that are not sodium
filled as they are on the EJ20R 205kW twin.
