What sort of performance enhancements could I expect from installing
custom cams and pistons (11:1)? This would be done after installing
the MRT N/A exhaust, and could possibly be followed by a custom
turbo system (nothing too wild, I'm not looking for a dragstrip car,
just something to burn the other imports while I'm driving around
town).

BTW, I *finally* managed to get a star with my car, come next
weekend, I should have KYB GR-2 shocks and H&R lowering springs -
the MRT exhaust is planned for next month

If you are considering adding a turbo in the future the last thing you
would want is a 11:1 compression ratio 9:1 would probably be the top
number to consider. We manufacture a turbo kit for n/a subaru engines
and they are limited to about 8lbs boost non-intercooled on an
average. I think the jury is still out for a bit on cams for the turbo
motor and if they give enough performance for the dollar when
installed in a car to be used on the street compared to intercoolers,
exhaust, intakes, ECU mods ect.

Would I be better off just installing an EJ22-T and upgrading the
turbos later? I don't have the luxury of being able to afford
either expensive parts or expensive shop work, and while I don't
want to be cheap to the extent of shoddy products and poor woork, I
am looking for the best bang for the buck.

The EJ22t is a good engine and would be something to consider if you
can find one in good condition. That is what I have in my'95 Impreza
coupe with a hd clutch, chromoly flywheel, factory Intercooler, UD
pulley, intake, exhaust, modified ECU w\chip, upgraded fuel pump,and
15lbs boost.

If you want to be cost effective, then cams is definitly not the way to go!
If you are considering an engine swap; an ej22t is going to be the easiest,
but an intercooled EJ20 is going to be more efficient.

What would I be looking at in terms of shop costs (aside from what
appears to be the usual hassles of getting an engine, crating etc)?
I can get pistons for $380/set in my choice of grind from Paeco - I
can get camshafts from them for $320 each ($210 with an exchange).
The other thought was a DIY turbo kit (i.e. custom up/down pipes, a
top-mount intercooler, and whichever turbo best suits my needs [most
likely the 23, since it spools early - as I've said before, I'm not
looking for a drag car[). This is my only car, so I can't afford to
spend a lot of time or money on trial and error (or TCU issues).
Besides, I'm not looking to invest in dog gears, so I'll probably be
done modifying the car once it's reached the 300-350 mark

If you swapped into the EJ20 or EJ22T, you wouldn't need new pistons and
cams.

A DIY turbo kit doesn't sound like your cup of tea if you're trying to
factor in shop costs. A DIY is kit is just that: Do it -yourself-.

Then wait a while longer, do some more research. if it's your ONLY car,
don't be so quick to mess with it. A turbo would be a big change, and could
potentially have your car off the road for months if done wrong.

If you hit 300-350, you'll need something more transmission-wise then what
you have now. Guaranteed.
