How much boost is safe to run on an otherwise stock car?

I would not run more than 10psi. honestly, you probably should not even raise it if you have stock exhaust and no intercooler. save up, do other mods, then raise the boost.

yea good point how much do you think itd be to get a good turbo back? and an ic installed i was thinking about the saab 900 since it seems to be the easiest to find?

well depends, do you want to have one custom made or do you want o piece together parts meant for a wrx? could be anywhere from $600-1000.
Saab IC is small, but is better than no ic.

well, there is the slant wrx, 02 wrx, saab, liberty air/water, or custom fmic. i wish a company made a nice direct replacement tmic.

Oh and does anyone know where you can get one of these wrx slants?

est. price for either should be about $150. although, air/water is alot more involved and is also the route i want to go, but have not completely made up my mind yet. i am not sure where to get a wrx slant ic. a place in cali sells the liberty awic for $150.

I've run over 13psi w/the saab 900 i/c and have no detonation problems until about 16psi.
Intercooling

I do not mean this as an advertizement to sell product (If you feel otherwise please remove it Dave) I only do electronics. But I work with/for a company that manufactures What is probably the best aftermarket turbo kit around and they also make intercoolers. If someone could come up with a bolt on IC everyone would like or possibly a existing IC that could be modified in quanity I would be glad to approch them with the idea. We have made some more of the water tanks that several people bought to install the Liberty unit. The IC they make now is in a extruded alum. case and has micromachined exchange units inside and works very well.

Don't worry Al, i know you know of some good products that we should know about, and i appreciate the efforts with the aluminum coolant tanks.

I'd love a drop in intercooler. The only thing it'd be worried about is the what the price would be compared to a used IC from a '93 - '96 WRX (assuming you can find one). Any idea how much they would run?

sorry to bring this old thread back.
but i am also curious about more boost.
if i were to say want to run about 11 psi, accordingly all that would be necessary would the intercooler and a turbo back exhaust?
im am not very good at the mechanical aspect of cars, so i guess what im really asking is what do i need to do to run around 11 psi?
and also does anybody have a roguh estimate of the power increase this would result in? i am not looking for much more power, just a little increase would be nice, and since the parts are out there i figure why not.
i also assume an air to air intercooler is less complicated to install than an air to water one?

The intercooler and turbo-back exhaust alone would increase your horsepower quite a bit. I would say that 11 psi is reasonable with these other mods. Combine the previous parts with a k&n air filter and an aluminum crankshaft pulley and you might not want to worry about upping the boost and the associated dangers. You'd have bullet proof horsepower pimpin style.
