My previous car was a '98 Acura Integra, which has on of the best
feeling shifters available on sport compact. My "new" 1992 Sport
Sedan has a stock 5-sp that, quite honestly, is one of the worst I've
felt. (Since I do car reviews for a local mag, I've felt quite a
few). The Subie's in-gear position has about as much play as my
Acura's neutral position.

I know there are short-shifter kits which I can "stick" in (sorry
about the pun), but I need some education here: will such a mod do
anything to fix the loose feel of the stick, giving it better gear
slotting definition, or is the solution somewhere else under the car,
possibly in the transmission?

Is it possible its just something wrong with my car that needs to be
fixed and not an issue inheirant in the basic design?

I'm all for the STi (SPT) short shift kit. not only does it shorten the
throw, but it also stiffens the whole unit quite a bit. Another kit is the
SYMS kit - but i can't vouch for it as never used it.

If you're not looking to drop the ~$260 to get the STi kit, then upgrading
the shifter bushings would solidify your feel. Yours are 10 years old now.
Even replacing them with stock subaru units would make it feel better.

Places like Cusco and Kartboy make bushing kits that you can purchase aside
from the shift kit. The problem with those is that they're for the Impreza,
not the Legacy - there is a differenc, albiet small.
