Replacing air suspension

Hi,

It seems that my front air struts are done for (Subaru Legacy 1990).
Replacing both would cost in excess of 1000 Canadian dollars. I've
read here and elsewhere that it is better to replace the air struts
with less expensive, longer lasting gas stuts, possibly from a used
subaru. Is this true? I've called a few mechanics here and in the US,
and they've all told me that it isn't possible to go from air to
gas....any thoughts?

thanks, mark.

Replacing the air suspension is the only thing to do and it can be
done. All that an atempt to repair the air setup will get you is
frustration and a lot smaller bank acount. I have a friend that has
low milage Impreza RS springs and struts for sale at a reasionable
price and someone on the board said that they would fit. I can't see
why they shouldn't fit, my Impreza has a complete Turbo Legacy
engine,drive train, brakes, crossmember,Agx struts.

Mark,

Yeah you can swap them out. All you need is the springs for a 90
legacy, the struts, and the top strut mount. I would recommend KYB GR2
or AGX struts....depending on what type of driving characteristics you
want.

I bought a 1993 Subaru Legacy recently. One of the major points was that
it had been retrofitted with regular suspension rather than the air-height.
It is possible, but you'll forever have a button on your dash that says
"Height" or whatever, but does nothing. =) Get more opinions.

What is involved? I don't know the answer to that.

Hi,
I have just last week replaced all four struts on my '92 Liberty GX
Wagon. KYB make struts which bolt straight in and work well. In Australia
the kit retails at around A$1400.00, a lot cheaper than replacing the air
suspension system.
