I don't think the new subies have much higher output....if any.

Short to getting your current alternator rewound with new windings.....I really don't know of any. I would suggest you invest in an optima deep cycle spiracel battery. I have been running mine for just a little over a year, and for most reasons why a high output alternator would be needed, you can add an optima to your electrical system and be good.

What are you trying to do? Are you adding a killer stereo. I've got pretty much close to my max draw for my alternator with my stereo system, and have no problems. You must remember that is max draw from the system, and I have the appropriate wiring and such.

Josh

I am planning to add a set of fog lamps and an amplifier. Since my
car is 9 yrs old with 140K on it, it is not a bad idea to invest in
an more powerful alternator.

personally.....I wouldn't worry about it. I've got fogs....I've got a high draw stereo.....I don't have issues. Make sure you have a decent battery....posssibly add a cap to the stereo system.....depending on your current draw.....but other then that.....I wouldn't worry about it

I would recommend a second battery (Dry cell or Optima red top or
better) in the trunk! The more storage the better! :-) $.02 Dan

The Red Top Optima is setup mainly for starting. It's not really a storage battery. If you want storage and what not, get the yellow top. It is deep cycle, yet still has the ability to start your car.

I highly recommend one.

Upgrade alternator, who has/sell them?

I realize this was not in the original question, but that would not
be legal for Rallying to add another battery. Well, not unless you
wanted to drive in the Open class. A 100A alternator is needed for
rallying (to run those Hella lights), and I was considering getting
one myself, although I was going to wait a while. I've got a query in
to the rest of the rally group asking about this. We'll see what they
say, and I'll post any helpful replies back to this list.

In actuality, you may be able to get enough light with one of those
high-density kits... but that still requires more power I think...

Upgrade alternator, who has/sell them?

I asked around and basically, the sentiment is this: replace it with
a Nippondenso alternator rated at 100A, and "afro-engineer" the
mounts to make it fit. You may need to play with the belt length and
pulleys as well. Nobody could come up with a simple solution to that
one... except for the idea of having the core rewound... which to me
sounded like the best idea, since that would result in a 'bolt-on'
solution.
