Tapping the VSS for an Alfa-Elite installation...?

I'm going to install an Alfa-Elite rally computer into my '92 Sport
Sedan. I'd like to tap the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) if possible.
Has anyone else in this group done this to an old-school legacy?
There's some custom wiring necessary as to not confuse the computer,
acc'd to a local rallyist that ran one on his Impreza. If someone has
just gone with the magnets instead I'd like to hear how that has
worked as well...have you ever had a rock take out a sensor?

Thanks,

Most guys here in Colorado just go with magnets. It's pretty hard to
knock those off. It's not likely that a rock will hit it if you mount
it correctly.

I have a web page that is going to be about rallying Legacys... would
you like to put anything about your team there? I'm specifically
interested in how you built the car. I really want the site to be a
resource for how to build rally cars... specifically when you start
with a late-model Legacy. I would love to see what you guys have, and
would like to feature the car in part of the site if you've kept good
records and have pictures...

Check me off-list and go to www.soobeerally.com to check out my car
(just starting in on it). I'm going to change the color schema on
that site sometime this weekend if I can get to it, so don't bother
telling me how gay it is... I already know :)

I can see how a rock could take out a speed sensor as it is mounted on
the side of the transmission. As far as custom wiring just what is the
Rally computer asking for? On the older Lagacy cars there isn't a lot
to gain with any fancy wiring as far as I have seen. A small switch in
the speedometer is driven at cable speed and produces one pulse per
revolution. On the Impreza RS it is a little more involved as a sine
wave is produced by a generator in the sensor and this is fed to an
integrated circuit in the speedometer and the speed pulse is derived
from this for the ECU.
