I broke it!!

Post by Binford »

After doing a couple bad luanches last week, my tranny has been going downhill, fast. I finally lost first gear today at lunch. I knew I was going to break it, so it was just a matter of time. I wasn't easy on it. About three blocks from home, I came to a stop at a stopsign. I take off in first and go WOT at about 5mph, car takes off for a split second, then all of a sudden "wwwhrrrrrrrrr", my car no longer responds to throttle. So I coast about half way home before I finally slam it into second gear and drive into my back yard to park it.

If I'm lucky the main shaft will still be usable, but I doubt it. But if it is, I should be able to use my other busted tranny for parts (lost second gear, including shearing the main shaft). I was also given a third busted tranny, but I'm sure it looks the same as the one I already have apart in the garage. I should be able to pull it out and see within the next week or so, I hope.

Input shaft is definately toast on the one you JUST borked.

You'll need to replace the input shaft, so you need one with a good first and second gear (of the correct ratio, or else). You should replace the output shaft gears too.

Using parts from a blown tranny to rebuild a blown tranny will buy you a few weeks. You'll probably blow it again.

If you blew first, you definately damaged the output gear.

Since the car moved with the tranny chewed up, you flung metal bits around in the case for 3 blocks.

Good luck getting it working again!

Yup. The guy I bought my SS from (transmission-less) has blown two-both lost second gear. Now I broke one-first gear. I was easier on my tranny than he was, as I double-clutched and rev-matched just about every shift. It's just the luanching that hurt me!

I just wish I $3500, so I could buy that dogbox. :x

Want a PPG straight cut dogbox in stead. Got this gearset on a hookup. I love it, but I want PPG.

Nothing wrong with this tranny though. It's TurboXS's first dogbox :)

Update! I kept starting it up every couple weeks until I just couldn't resist trying to drive it again. I pulled it out of second and got it to shift into all the gears, except first as that acts like nuetral. Anyway, I drove it around my back yard a couple times until the fourth of July. That is when I was really tempted to drive it. So I cruised the beach a couple times WITHOUT FIRST! I didn't want to push my luck any more, so I brought it back home. Well, that didn't last too long, as I drove it some more over the next couple days. Then, some more. And more. I am now driving it as my main source of transportation everyday, and I'm not taking it easy, either! A while back a chunk must've wedged into the fifth gear shift fork as it won't physically shift into fifth anymore, and I'm not going to force it. So I'm driving a three speed manual SS! I've logged almost 500 miles since I blew it up! And for those of you that have lightweight flywheels, try taking off in second gear! I have to! This thing is ridiculas that it still moves! And yes, I am fully aware that this may grenade at any time, but I wanna see how far I can push this thing now! I've got a replacement in my garage just waiting to go in..........

What worries me is that if you get going 45-55mph in 4th gear and a big chunk lodges itself between the gears, locking all of your tires up.

Could cause an accident.. you know?
