HELP Complete rebuild of EJ22T Block

Hi all,

Im not sure if I remember enough to put this engine back together. My first complete rebuild and between this and all the other bazillion things I have going on. Im just not sure. I'm gonna give it a try. Below is a pic of everything back from the shop or cleaned up by yours truely. I am open to all help and direction as I go through this process. A couple initial questions if anyone can help.

1. Some, not all, of the case bolts had rubber/metal washers. I soaked these bolts/washers in carb cleaner and it ate away at the rubber. I thought washers would be included in my full rebuild kit. Maybe they are and I am missing something. Why are there washers on some of the bolts and not others? Are these washers only on bolts that come in contact with wather passages?

2. Can case bolts be reused? Im actually not sure of the original positions of them all.

You need the rubber/metal washers. Case bolts can be reused.

Thanks Legacy777.

Why does some bolts have washers and others don't. I find that strange. How can I tell where to position the rubber/metal washers? Does it have something to do with the heads?

The bolts hold the block together. Those bolts are in the water jacket, and need to be sealed off from the rest of the block. The rubber/metal washers do that.

You may save yourself a lot of money by getting the o-rings at a hardware store. They should have oil resistant ones.

If you have a Harbor Freight where you live at. They sell the o-ring kits that have all sorts of sizes for ten dollars, and it's metric. The only o-ring that it doesn't really have is the one for the oil cooler if you have it on your motor. Any who, have fun with your rebuild and take your time. Took me five months, mostly because the machine shop was taking their time with the crank and I kept braking parts, to get my engine back in the car. But it runs great and no leaks :-D . About to hit 2000 miles :-D .

O Rings

One question. I'm ready to put the block halves togather. Im pretty sure ive identified the o rings that are necessary. Problem is they seem too big. Is this usual? Do I just have to play with them until they fit? Am I an idiot?

Yeah I would probably say they are too big.

I'm assuming those came from a engine gasket kit that was non-oem?

The kit was not OEM unfortunately. I did find o-rings that worked. Now Im back to figuring out my washer problems.

Not all of the cylinder block bolts had washers on them. After looking at the parts catalogue it appears that there should be washers on all bolts. Has anyone had experience with this?

Yeah all my cylinder block bolts had the washers and they wouldn't come off or separate.

My O-rings were too large also and they kept falling out when I tried to put the block halves together so I just used some of the "right stuff" on the o-ring to make it stick in place until I got the block halves bolted together. The "right stuff" is what I used to seal the block halves too. In the manual it specifies some expensive subaru compound but I used that and it's worked ok pretty good so far.

I got it to work by shaving the sides of the o ring slightly. One was still a bit big but I think it seated.

I wouldn't have risked that. I would have just hit up the dealer for the O rings, can't cost much.

I called a bunch of dealers in the area. None of them had them in stock and I was being a bit impatient. Luckilly I found Orings that were just slightly off. I was unable to use the Orings that were in the kit. Im pretty sure they seat correctly. I was actually tinking of taking the block back apart to make sure. Newver can be too safe.

You got the standard o-ring kit didn't you? The red box with the o-rings.

Its OK. Im taking the block apart and installing subaru parts. Im just looking for a place to order them. So, Im not completly impatient! :-)

when you get the right o-rings for the block and put it back together. Just a little tip: take a small wire and make sure the oil channel for the rear main seal to the oil pan doesn't have any rtv in it. If that is clogged up it will leak out the main seal.

Hi All,

I got a couple more things done on the engine. I'll be adding pics later.

I have one question, how much is a complete running ej22t shortblock engine with harness worth?

200,000 miles.

I know a shortblock from the dealer with no harness is about $2200 now

I drove 9 hours to toronto, stayed overnight, pulled the engine and harness, drove 9 hours back. Engine was only $100. Im still trying to decide if it was worth it.
