Code 11 - Crank angle sensor

Post by BSOD2600 »

Almost every day, I data log my drive to/from work with RevScan. Either yesterday or this morning, I checked the ECU for codes and there was none. This evening, Code 11 (history) - Crank angle sensor was present. I find this a little odd, since I've never seen the CEL light on and the car obviously starts/drives/idles ok. Tomorrow, I'm going to follow the FSM and test out the crank sensor and wires back to the ECU. Doubt I'll find anything interesting though.

What would only cause a code 11?

When I was reinstalling the engine into the car during the swap, I did attach a wrench to the block to turn it over to try and get it mated up with the transmission. Forget which way I turned it... If the timing some how got off a tooth, would the car still run normally, but the timing be majorly screwed up and ECU keep retarding itself? Never having installed a timing belt, what would I look for to make sure things are aligned properly? I recall the umm center sprocket should be lined up with the back marking and not the arrow/notch on the front. What else though?

There's two methods of checking the belt. The quick and easy way would be to check the marks on the cam gears and crank gear (yep the back notch not the front) and make sure they line up with the notches in the timing covers and the notch in the crank sensor boss.

Or you can find out how many teeth are supposed to be between each mark on the gears and count them on your belt.

Alright more timing belt questions. I didn't take off the entire cover to check things... just the side covers. The alignment marks on both camshafts line up properly.

When the crankshaft pulley alignment mark is at the 0 degree mark on the plastic cover, the alignment marks on the camshafts are off.

Yet, when I align the camshafts to their top markings, then the crankshaft pulley doesn't align.

Is this how things are suppose to be?

When the timing marks are aligned it really has nothing to do with being at 0 deg.

If you look at these pics, taking into account the pulley keyway, I think you're probably alright. I went and looked at the pulley in the pic, and another LW pulley I had, and for some reason the timing mark is off on it.

You could pulley the pulley off pretty easily and check where the key way is in comparison to the pic I posted with the crank gear.

Was trying to hold out on taking the crankshaft pulley off. 1) don't have a torque wrench 2) scared to mess up the pulley/key stuff after spending the past hour reading over peoples timing belt threads. Looks like I might have to though to check things....

Was hoping timing was the source of all my issues (ecu retarding itself a lot under load) and now the latent Code 11 CEL.

Who else might happen to have a picture of the crank pulley with its alignment mark?

BSOD I think were in the same boat with our timing belts being off. Are you running a OEM belt or aftermarket? I was reading about some aftermarket belts having the marks off by half a tooth so it is either right or wrong when you put it on, and I do not recall how the marks on the belt matched to the mark on the cam's!

I believe its an OEM belt -- had it put on this engine by an independent subaru shop a year or so ago.
