Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
The pin keeps the CV axle on the axle stubb, it's very important.
Are you sure you have the holes 100% lined up between the axle stubb & cv joint splines? If so, make sure you're installing the pin from the end that chamfered a little bit. If the roll pin is one of those pins with a solid long slit down the side, try crimping it in a vice so it's not quite as large. That may help with installing it.

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
Yes I believe I had it the right way, just this one side has been really really suborn for some reason...
I ended up slightly thinning down the pin with a wheel grinder (just a hair) and put it back in, I have to admit I still had a bout 1/4 inch out of the slot so I just grind it down...it should be enough to keep all that stuff together.
Besides that cv axles finally replaced, I have to get an alignment though I marked the bolts but it's still no right.
For what it's worth if anybody as kookish as I am tries to do the same job just make sure you have a real punch of the right size and make sure you're punching the pin out of the bigger hole, and get a solid gear puller if one axle is stuck/frozen!
Next time I do this job it should only take me an hour or two...Live and Learn !

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
The axels fit in only one way, if it is 180 degrees out the pin will not go all the way in and about 1/4 will be sticking out. Are you sure the axel is in properly?

Yup....that's what I was trying to get at.....it may not be on properly.rallyak wrote:The axels fit in only one way, if it is 180 degrees out the pin will not go all the way in and about 1/4 will be sticking out. Are you sure the axel is in properly?

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
I guess I'll have to take it apart and double check ugh what a nightmare, it's raining cats and dogs too...
It was hard to tell which way it had to go because autoparts sent me two different axles and the one on this specific side had holes the same size and each end...
the pin has been a total pain from dis-assembly to reassembly regardless.

I drove the car on fwy yesterday everything was fine so far, beside pulling slightly to one side, but I didn't get it aligned yet

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
what if the axle is installed 180 degree (upside down) , I mean the pin is solid in there, does it really matter matter?
Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
If the pin is in there, I wouldn't worry about it.

oh yeah it's in there tight as a tiger!
Thanks Josh

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
As I was underneath my car today fixing stuff, I remember how the axle didn't go fully all the way in, about 1/4 inch didn't go through...
I've been driving it like this since, with now problem so far, I try to get at it today and unbolt the spindle nut, resulting in breaking the breaker bar, so it's on tight!
Anything I should really worry about ?

Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
ps: look at that crappy cardone axle boot, a few month and already cracking, what a joke!
Re: Steering wheel jerking left and right on smooth pavement
My only concern would be the mating surface for the wheel bearing seals if things didn't line up properly.
