New Subarus use a different type of key blank, and the STi key is of that type.
From what I understand, an STi key can be cut to match your stock key's cut, but is a little too thick to fit in the doors and trunk. Apparently it fits into the ignition just fine though, and with a little bit of milling or even filing can be made to fit into all the locks.

I got my ignition switch replaced fairly recently and I got a different key. Recently the key that works in the doors and is supposed to work on the trunk, dose not work on the trunk anymore. The key was kinda worn so I tried the valet key and lubricating the lock--no dice. I guess the locks shot. Any thoughts?vrg3 wrote:What's wrong with the trunk lock?

Hmm, I don't know what could cause that.
You might consider taking the trunk lock to a locksmith, though, and ask him/her to fix it and at the same time re-key it to match your ignition key.

same here.. i have just a copy of the valet key.. and even that is well-worn. from what the previous owners told me, the trunk lock was busted from their first son hanging some heavy key/lanyard setup off of it and doing something or other.. all i know is that it only opens with the latch now.. as opposed to my previous suby, which only opened via the key
very funny.
I been meaning to have a locksmith re-do my ignition and trunk, as they both just have problems.. the ignition is sticky, and doesn't want to unlock sometimes, and so i have to have it turned just right, otherwise i have to sit a for a while and wait on it..
for 14+yrs, though, its in good shape..

Valet keys don't open trunks or gloveboxes. Otherwise, why would they have valet keys at all?
You can cancel the inside trunk release, lock the seat backs, and the only way to get into the trunk is with one of the two master keys.
What color is your non-master key? The Valet key is silver I think, the master key is gold. The STi blank, is basically a valet key. Valet keys are thicker than regular keys, that's why they won't fit the glove box or the trunk.

The STi blank is a completely different blank from the ones that are correct for our cars. Our cars use an X123 blank. The X123 has a certain groove pattern and is meant to take 8 cuts. New Subarus use an X237 blank, which has a different groove pattern and 10 cuts.
The keys are different and not technically interchangeable. They just happen to be close enough that it works out for a lot of people, apparently.

I've got an STi key for my Legacy. It works on all the locks (doors, trunk, ignition). I took it to a lock smith and he said that if it didn't fit in the slot before it was cut, that it wouldn't fit afterwards. He was wrong. I went down and cut it myself at Home Depot. It was a little rough on the doors and trunk at first but works just fine now. It's a nice feeling turning that key everytime and then using the push button start.
