98 BD GT catback and STi hangers

Post by entirelyturbo »

Well, I've had some time to drive the car around with my 98 Legacy GT exhaust and all 4 STi exhaust hangers...

First off, the exhaust bolts right up. There are hardly any differences between the two. The only thing I can find different is that the GT exhaust has a smaller resonator and some unidentified canister right behind it :?. I suspect it's emissions-related.

Now the muffler is much bigger than what I had on there before (a Midas muffler  ) so I think I might be enjoying some free-flow benefits of a larger muffler. It doesn't sound any different though.

What I really like is the look though. The look to me of the single larger exhaust tip out the bumper is MUCH more elegant and stylish than the two smaller ones. I'll get pics soon.

The biggest difference I can note is the STi hangers. They are VERY stiff, hardly flexible at all. This has good and (to some) bad implications however. The good part is the exhaust won't move! In all honesty, ever since I've had the car, I heard a rattling noise in the back whenever I would go down a brick street. That sound is completely gone. But this stiffness also means that the movements of the exhaust are going to be transferred to the body. Upon startup, and whenever you change RPM's quickly, you can definitely hear and feel the resonance through the body. I think it's pretty cool myself 8), but some may be annoyed by it.

Overall, I'm still extremely happy with the setup though. I got a much newer catback exhaust and new hangers for the price of the Midas muffler I had on it before  A worthwhile setup if you come across a deal like I did!

Sounds great! What's the diameter of the exhaust?

A) That's a cat.

B) That's the sign of being a true car enthusiast. Things that would annoy most, raise the little hairs on the back of your neck.

Steve, the diameter appears to be the same as the original exhaust. Just the axle-back could have bolted right up to my original midpipe, but I like the fact that most of the exhaust is fairly new now.

BAC, I don't think it's a cat. It's no bigger than the size of a Coke can. Plus there's no heatshielding around it, and I would expect to find heatshielding around a cat.

I would recommend the STi hangers to anyone, as long as that extra vibration doesn't bother them. Exhaust really stays still, and the car feels more solid than ever before. They're about $10 apiece, so you would be spending $40 just for 4 rubber pieces, but chances are your old ones are getting squishy anyway. As the saying goes, while you replace, upgrade! :)

I should have pics sometime this week too...

Hmm... Interesting. I haven't seen a BD mid-pipe, so that was just a guess.

Get me a picture of it, and I'd probably know what it is if I saw it.

It's a resonator. IIRC, there were two cats on my 2.5GT, both located close to the "bends" in the exhaust. The third canister is the resonator.

My lazy ass finally got around to getting a picture of the exhaust, I couldn't possibly think of a better looking stock exhaust for these cars, I LOVE the single-tip look! 8)

Hehe. You're the opposite of me. I'd much rather have two 2/2.5-inch outlets than the single 3.5-incher I have on there now.
