I figured I'd start a new thread for my extremely productive experience with the mod.

Finished it this afternoon and installed it.

There is definately a noise increase. My BOV is louder than Legacy92ej22t's, although my turbo doesn't sound as loud. I seem to be at full spool a little sooner, although I couldn't do any WOT runs because I was in my neighborhood.

Goosing the throttle in 2nd at 3k, all you can hear is "pssht pssht pssht pssht". It's beautiful.

Definately recomend everyone to do this.

Total cost: $30.

Itemized:

$9.99 - Mug (Target, automotive department. "100% spillproof)
$5 - Misc. fittings (Home Depot should have all of them. Mine didn't so I had to import them from vrg3 in NY).
$8.32 - Carbide Dremel bit to enlarge the hole for the elbow. (Home Depot)
$4.99 - PermaPoxy Plastic-Weld epoxy. This stuff worked GREAT. (Pep-Boys)
$2.00 - 1' Fuel hose to replace the vaccum line from the purge canister. (Pep-boys).

I absolutely recomend using an elbow for the wastegate solenoid (or whatever the hell that thing is) hose. If you do, you can re-use the stock tube instead of replacing it with a fuel hose. It was a bitch getting the fitting into the line, but a little heat from my work light and it was fine (it was 35 degrees here today).

All in all, it was definately worth it. A lot cheaper than using the MRT pipe. There were no modifications to the stock peices so swapping back to stock takes 5 minutes.

The only downside is the tight fit. It's going to be a bitch to replace the air-filter. I'll probably end up switching to a K&N cone filter or K&N Panel.

Louder then mine, really? That must be pretty loud indeed. Just think what it will sound like when you get intercooled!

I seriously think it's as loud, if not louder, than your car. The thing is going to be deafening when I'm IC'd. I can't wait!

I don't think I'm going to listen to the radio... ever... after I'm intercooled.

yours had sound increace. hmmm mabe i did something wrong cause i didnt get any out of mine.

but i did get plenty of sound i put in my cone filter.the bov is almost as loud as a vent to air. its awsome.

How did you set the purge canister line up and how did you set the wastegate solenoid up? All of my hoses are at stock angles, but there are no bends in the Purge Canister line.

Mine sounds exactly like an atmospheric BOV. I want to do a flyby on my neighbor so I can see if he can hear it from outside the car.

I'm also de-snorkified, but that shouldn't effect anything really.

Do you have a picture of your cone setup?

no pics of the cone but when i put the cup in i could hear the bov but you kinda had to listen for it. with the cone on it sounds like a atnospheric bov. i had to take a few tips from 91white-t on getting the filter on though. i had a filter that i got from auto zone for a custom settup i was building for my civic. well that never got done so to put the cone on the sube. standard cones are too long so you need to cut a slit in the gasket and take it off and flip it upside down and drill 4 holes in the filter get some 1/4" x 1" bolts and nuts and bolt it up. if you want to have to use an adaptor and have the filter fit properly with the maf in the same position so you dont get the possible bad reading use k&n filter part numbers RA-0970 or RA-097V the last one has a chrome endcap.
the engine sounds normal up till 2500 then it sounds like a jet till 4500-5000 and thats when the deep boxer comes thorugh.

Damn, sounds way to complicated. I might have to do my own homebrew method as I always end up doing.

I have to try and tune out the BOV now. It's really loud. I love it. Makes me feel cool

i love the bov too good thing i have a auto but its realy not that complicated just a universal filter can have problems with the maf
i havent had any though. just get one or the other filter (the universal or the k&n) and i bet youl love it. i already had a drill and bits so it took me 30 mins to get it on including the time to run to the home depot. the only reason to take out the gasket and flip it is so there is a flat seal against the maf but thats if you decide to bolt it stright up.

but if your ultra coutious use the K&N.

Haha, i have been using one of those mugs for a few weeks now (for its actual purpose). It does seem like a cool idea. As a sidenote, do any of you have the lid left over? Mine broke and the damn thing leaks all over me when i'm running for the campus buses in the morning.

Which cup? Any particular brand?

I went into my local Target and measured every mug they had there. I couldn't find any that were the right dimensions.

It's in the "Automotive" section. It's the 100% spill proof mug.

It meets the bare minimum requirements that were posted, but it is a SNUG fit.

Mine fits with no problems, and I haven't had any issues in the 200 miles I've driven it so far.

Brat4by4 (who almost killed himself cutting part of the mug), and VRG3 both have the exact cup that I have, and IIRC, both have theirs installed (or ready to be installed).

I picked one up today.

I happened to have the pipe adapter from my i/c stuff lying around, so I just popped the bottom off and used that to press out the inner platic bits.

That cup has a pretty neat lid.

Grr.....

I went to put it on and found out one of my hose clamps was too small (the largest fitting).

I decided to zip-tie it on until I got a new hose clamp. While I was tightening it on, the fitting broke off.

Then I went to take it off so I could re-JB Weld it. SNAP! The medium sized fitting snapped off when I tried to remove the hose to the purge canister.

So now I have to wait 'til tomorrow to pick up a new hose clamp and get everything on.

The worst part is the fact I accidentally broke off the smallest nipple on the bottom of the stock box.

Can the car run without that hose attached?

D'oh.

That hose is the wastegate solenoid bleed hose. You can probably get away with just leaving it open, but each side is a small vacuum leak.

When I did the coffee cup thing I used a small pyramid of Goop at the base of each plastic fitting, and now I can't break the fittings off even if I try fairly hard. Maybe this time around you could try doing it that way?

It's just about done now.

I think I may have borked it when I was grinding down the excess pieces of fittings protruding into the intake mug. While doing so, the fittings got pretty darn hot and I cooled them down with water. In the process, it also removed all the JB weld on the back side.

When I re-did it, I put some extra stuff on the inside, plus I don't have to grind anything else away.

I'm not worried about them breaking once I get it installed. I was just putting WAY too much pressure on them and they were ground down even with the inside of the mug, so they didn't have a good backing.

There we go.

Picked up an appropriate sized hose clamp for the large fitting and put that thing on there.

I will probably take it off in a few days to check my 'welds'.

This thing now sounds a bit louder.

I am now waiting for the JB weld to dry again.

On my way to work, the largest fitting broke off.

It turns out that the engine will stall if that hose is not connected.......

Mine cut out on an interchange cloverleaf.

I did a few things different this time:

~This time I leaned the large fitting back so the hose wouldn't put as much pressure on the fitting.

~I drilled some extra small holes near the main hole. This will let more of the JB weld go through and connect on both the inside and outside of the cup.

~I peened the sides of the largest hole in some. This will allow the fitting to be held a little better.

Hopefulle these little changes will make the difference.

(I'm beginning to lose faith in JB Weld.......
