8G5 strut bar

Post by omegax »

What car is the 8G5 exactly. I picked up a strut bar for 10 bucks only thing is that the paint on the ends is chipped.. id repaint it or sell it as is because it deosnt seem to fit my legacy :-/ i figured for 10 bucks its worth a shot. It seems this little metal peice that is welded to the top of the body is in the way.. this peice seems totaly usless unless the turbo models use it for something :(

I think that should be BG5 Which would be the second gen legacy 95-98 or 95-99. I dunno if it'll fit or not.

Are you talking about a front strut bar? You must mean that little tab that comes off the pass strut tower, right? Its a mount to stick the hood prop in so you can open the hood extra wide. I ground a notch in my bar to clear it. I just oriented it on the bolts and marked off what I needed to remove with a marker and ground away.

Would it make sense to grind that away instead of grinding away at your strut bar? Wont that make it loose some of its structural integrity? Also being that the top of the strut isnt nice and flat... the little molding thing going around? How does this effect the installation of the bar. It may be nothing but when i see bars on other cars and newer subarus the top of the strut is nice and flat and the ring rests perfectly on the strut.

If you grind it right, it should lie flat. I cut a notch and ground half thickness on the bottom a little so it would completely clear the thing. Structural loss should be marginal. Remember that some bars only bolt at two points even.

The reason I ground the bar rather than the eyehole was that I didn't want to encourage rust as the galvanize coating on the steel would be lost and primer and paint wouldn't completely make up for that. I made a neoprene gasket for the mounting also to help reduce any vibration and prevent possible rubbing that would also encourage rust (I'm very concerned about it, can you tell?). Who knows if you'd need the little eye someday anyway.

how much should I expect to pay for a rear strut bar that doesnt suck? I dont want to install my struts/springs without it, so as to prevent chassis squeaks while going over bumps

I think I ended up paying about $80 shipped from ebay. Its a Cusco clone without the slot at the ends of the ovalized bar. Preloadable and everything from an Impreza.
