EJ20 DOHC N/A questions

Post by legacycontinues »

1. does anyone know if this is a single or dual port exhaust?

2. Can I use my A/C and P/S units?

3. I have been talking to the guys over at www.garagetuning.com and the have assured me the engine will bolt in and wire up directly for the most part. They did tell me it wouldn't work because of the cam sensor. Can I use my cam sensor or rewire the included one?

4. Hear it will run rich...is this so?

5. The seller assures me it is from a 90-94 JDM legacy. Will my EJ22 N/A intake manifold fit if need be?

6. If the manifold does /doesn't fit can I use the 22's injectors and fuel rails??

7. If I wanted to could I run the DOHC EJ20 heads on the EJ22's block?

8. Anybody foresee any other problems.

9. What is involved with swapping manifold wiring harness? Would those be the three connectors behind the TB?

10. Fuel issues? Could I run an inline adjustable FPR to trim it back if too rich? Would I be starving the injectors?

11. Where would I get parts for this? Autozone? or Japanzone?

I have done lots of research about this and I am only asking these questions because I could not find the answer I needed.

Let me thank everyone in advance for thier help. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

the following is based on my experience of installing a jdm ej20g into my 1991 ss, so I can't guarantee accuracy for your swap.

1. not sure...my ej20g is dual

2. most likely...I was able to.

3. I was able to use the ej20g cam sensor, and it works just fine.

4. use your ej22 injectors, ej22 ecu, ej22 maf sensor, and it should be fine. I'm using my ej22t ecu and injectors, and it runs great (gets 26 m/gal on freeway).

5. I doubt it. the ej20g intake ports are way bigger than the ej22t ports.

6. yes on the injectors, no on the rails. (in my experience)

7. maybe. compression ratio would change.

8. I'm very happy with my swap...no problems so far after about 2000mi.

9. I had to extend some of the wires (iac valve, water temp sensor, etc). the main connectors (3 of them) are by the battery. it's pretty straight forward. use some good crimpers.

10. use your old ecu, injectors, maf sensor, and this won't be an issue.

11. not sure...

Thanks for all the info heel.

Is the EJ20g a N/A engine or is that the turbo model?

I was told I have to put my intake harness on the EJ20....is this where I have to extend the wires?

yes (assuming the ej20 and ej20g layout is the same). when you see the two engines side by side, you'll see what needs to be extended. I think I had to extend a total of about six wires. It's not too bad at all.

one other thing... if the ej20 has coil on plug ignition, you'll have to find a place to mount your coil pack, and find some plug wires that will fit. I used a universal accel set. If the ej20 is waste spark, you won't have to worry about this.

It is the waste spark so I am set. I have a diamond coil I got from VRG3 that I will be using. If the EJ20 DOHC is the same set up as the EJ20 SOHC, I am set with the mounting of coil.

I can handle extending 6 wires with no problem.

I can't thank you enough for the info.

You wouldn't happen to know if my engine is closed deck..would you?

I wouldn't mind putting a little boost on it in the future,

What about the Ver 8 intake manifold (red)

I'm not sure if it's closed deck or not. Being that it's from the early '90's, it might be.

I'm pretty sure the v8 manifold would not fit. Plus, the sensors/conectors would be different.

If you want boost, you might consider getting an ej20g. It would probably be cheaper/easier in the long run.

I'm getting the 20 delivered to my door for $435.00 I could go pick it up but I think that would cost me more in the long run.

I think I will keep it N/A untill my wife gets the car she wants then I will drive the DL and then I will be able to put the legacy in the garage for the EJ20T swap. I want to make it a TT but I just don't think I want to do all that fabing...

im really curious how this is gonna work out for you.

i have always wanted to build a FWD impreza powered by a tweaked JDM ej20 to compete in the G2 rally class.

Yall are going to shoot me but I just found an EJ22 with 110K miles on it REAL CHEAP. SO I jumped on it.

Please forgive me. Maybe I will buy an EJ20 and drop it in my 88 DL... That would be fun with the 5MT.

How are you gonna put an EJ series engine onto a EA transmission? ;)

Diz and I have been discussing buying one of these Ej20's to play with. When you can get them for $450 from a handful of the importers, it can't hurt to get one and tear it down.

And BTW, these are OPEN DECK engines...
