Hi again-
I've got an EJ22T engine from my old SS (where it had a 4EAT) and a low low mileage 5MT from an SS. Great so far, right? Well I want to put them in my 1990 NA 5MT shell. Cable clutch.
So my questions are:
1. Can the cable clutch be made to work on the 5MT SS gearbox? I happen to have a very new clutch in the NA already. I'd prefer just to use it.
2. If not (or even if so), what pedal boxes will work? I have no slave on the 5MT SS box so whatever rig I get I will need the whole hydraulic system from pedal to clutch fork. What will fit? Up to and including WRX?
A.
PS I've got the low, low mileage SS rear diff already so no worries about the ratios. And yes I thought of using the 4.11 gears from the NA diff in the SS diff and just keeping the NA gearbox, mating it to the EJ22T. But the NA gearbox is veddy veddy noisy. Worrisome noisy. Also I cruise at about 80mph and by my calcs in fifth that's just where torque peaks with the 3.9. You drag racers can run 4.44s. My rally car tops out at 120mph at 7000 in fifth. Great for rally. Sucky for the road. Want longer legs. 3.9 fine.

No, the cable clutch can not be used on the turbo legacy transmission.
Pretty much any year hydraulic clutch pedal assembly "should" work. WRX stuff should work. I'd stick with a clutch and slave cylinder for either a turbo legacy or WRX.

Drat. Then I need a clutch and PP too, eh? I presume the flywheel is the same for NA and Turbo?

Yes you need clutch & PP. The flywheels are different too.musketeerracing wrote:Drat. Then I need a clutch and PP too, eh? I presume the flywheel is the same for NA and Turbo?
Basically everything associated with the turbo transmission must be used, and is not the same as the n/a transmission.

Sorry to keep pushing, but a Subaru tech I know and respect responded:
"There are two threaded bosses on the case, move the
pivot to the correct one and put the cable fork there
instead of the hyd. one."

You need to understand there are two different hydraulic clutch setups.
The subaru tech is correct if you were talking about a normally aspirated transmission. The turbo transmission has a completely different clutch pivot system.
Here is a pic of the normally aspirated setup. You can see the pivot point, and the two bosses.

The holes are there, however they are not tapped.
If you're that persistent to use the n/a clutch, it can be done by tapping the holes, but what are you saving 200 bucks for a clutch....it's not worth the hassle. Plus the turbo clutch setup is superior.

You should note that the two pivot points are there to allow the use of a push cable setup, and a push hydraulic setups.
